    Lot #240220

This 1955 Jaguar XK140 MC fixed-head coupe was acquired by the current owner in 2016 and was subsequently refurbished over the next two years, including a repaint, a reupholstered interior, and an overhaul of the frame. The car is powered by a 3.4-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission and is finished in black over red leather. This XK140 is now offered by the seller, a BaT Local Partner, on behalf of the current owner with service records and a clean California title in the owner’s name.

The car is finished in black and was repainted in 2016. Features include a split windshield, front vent windows, bright trim, and chrome bumpers. Hella headlights were installed in 2019, and an area of paint bubbling was repaired on the roof in 2020.

The 16″ wire wheels are mounted with Dunlop Road Speed tires that should be replaced due to age. A spare is stored under the trunk floor, and braking is handled by drums at each corner. The brake lines and wheel cylinders were replaced during the refurbishment. A replacement brake master cylinder and tie rod ends were installed in 2019.

The adjustable seats were re-trimmed in red leather with black piping and a replacement dash, door panels, and door wood trim were installed during the refurbishment.

The four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of Smiths instrumentation consisting of a reverse-sweep 6k-rpm tachometer, a 140-mph speedometer, and an ammeter alongside gauges for oil pressure, water temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 4,800 miles, a few hundred of which were added under current ownership. The seller states the mileage is not accurate, and total mileage is unknown.

The 3.4-liter inline-six featurses dual SU carburetors and a C-type cylinder head. The radiator was rebuilt in 2016 and a replacement wiring harness and oil pump were installed in 2017. Work in 2019 involved installing Pertronix electronic ignition and a Flamethrower ignition coil as well as replacing the starter solenoid, exhaust manifold gasket, valve cover gaskets, and spark plugs.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission, and a replacement clutch was installed in 2016. The frame was stripped, sand-blasted, and powder-coated during the refurbishment, and replacement wood floors were installed.

The car is registered as Planned Non-Operation in the state of California.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
