1953 Jaguar XK120 Coupe

To be offered at auction WITHOUT RESERVE ,Saturday, August 14, 2010

Chassis No. W648685

Estimate: $80,000-$100,000 US

- From the collection of Jerry and Kathy Nell

- One of 2,678 XK120 coupes built between 1951-54

- Frame-off restoration between 1983-89

This fixed head coupe joined the Gerald and Kathy Nell collection in March 1993. The Nells are well known in Jaguar enthusiast circles, particularly for their Jaguar collection, which at one time comprised a C-Type, D-Type and XK-SS. This car came from Santa Barbara, California, and prior to that, it was resident in Maine. The car received a ground-up restoration between 1983-89, and while it has the correct motor, the dash tag number indicates it is not original to the car. The car has never been shown, and Kathy Nell thinks of it as Cinderella: “She was put in the basement and just never got out the door. I brought her up six months ago and we’ve worked on her ever since. She runs really nicely now.” Nicely presented in white with a tan leather interior, wire wheels and less than 39,000 miles showing on the odometer, this is an excellent example from a very well-respected collection.

This 1953 Jaguar XK120 SE is a left-hand-drive fixed-head coupe that was built in October 1952 and delivered to Hornburg Jaguar in Los Angeles, California. It later spent time in Maine before returning to California, where it underwent a refurbishment from 1983 to 1989. The car is finished in Olde English White over Biscuit leather upholstery and powered by a 3.4-liter DOHC inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes chrome 16″ wire wheels, front disc brakes, Lucas-style front fog lamps, fender-mounted side mirrors, twin SU carburetors, burl wood trim, and a Clarion AM/FM cassette stereo. Acquired by the current owner in 2005, this XK120 FHC is now offered on dealer consignment with partial service records, a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, and a clean Oregon title.

Originally finished in British Racing Green, the car was repainted in Olde English White during a seven-year refurbishment process that was completed in 1989. Equipment includes chrome front bumpers, chrome rear bumperettes, fender-mounted mirrors, a split windshield, Lucas-style front fog lamps, and dual exhaust outlets.

Chrome 16″ knock-off wire wheels wrapped in Firestone Cavallino Sport 200 tires. A matching spare is stored in the trunk. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums.

Previously finished Suede Green, the cabin was reupholstered in Biscuit leather with matching door panels and carpets under previous ownership. The front seats were reportedly modified, and additional equipment includes lap belts, burl wood trim, a dash-mounted rear-view mirror, and a Clarion AM/FM cassette stereo.

The four-spoke steering wheel fronts centrally mounted Smiths instrumentation including a reverse-sweep 6k-rpm tachometer, a 140-mph speedometer, and gauges for fuel level, amperage, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 14k miles, and the current owner has added approximately 20k. Total mileage is unknown.

The 3.4-liter inline-six is equipped with a replacement engine block and features twin side-draft SU carburetors. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. A compression test was recently carried out.

The chassis tag lists car number 680279, while the Oregon title lists the car’s VIN as W648685.

The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate shows the factory colors and identification numbers along with a build date of November 3, 1952.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
