Additional description from above auction:
www.artfact.com/auction-lot/1958-jaguar-xk-150-fixedhead-coupe-4.5-litre-reg-1-c ...

1958 Jaguar XK 150 Fixedhead Coupe 4.5 Litre Registration no: GSK728 Chassis no: 58358698W E 30 000-35 000 Purchased by the vendor in 1995 from an English owner who had imported it from the USA in the early 1990s, the car at that time was fitted with an automatic gearbox and had been converted to right hand drive specification. In the vendor's own words he then decided to turn it into "an XK 'Special' suitable for the new Millenium". With the help of Jaguar specialists Marina Garage of Bournemouth, the 3.8-litre unit and automatic gearbox were removed and an inspection of its body and chassis found these to be in very good condition as a result of its years spent in the California sun. A discussion with Tewksbury-based Jaguar engine specialist Les Trafford resulted in the aim to develop the car for fast road work and occasional racing use. Another good 3.8 engine was acquired which was subsequently uprated to 4.5-litre capacity using an E Type block. New 'high lift' cams, Carrello rods, and Cosworth pistons were installed with the unit breathing through Triple Weber 45 DCOEs mounted on a beautifully crafted Lynx manifold. With a stainless steel six branch exhaust manifold the dyno test resulted in 325bhp being recorded - a worthy and significant improvement over the 265bhp of the standard XK 150S. Marina Garage then fitted the engine back into the car mating it to a 5 speed Getrag gearbox. In keeping with the bigger engine capacity, the brakes and steering were up-rated whilst a Cambridge Sports Alloy Radiator and Kenlowe fan assisted the cooling. Guy Broad supplied a suitable Power Lock rear axle/diff set up and 16" alloy rim competition wires by Torino were fitted. Although looking like a standard model except for an alloy gearlever and competition steering wheel, the vendor naturally confirms that comparisons must end there and that it is "very, very fast". Finished in black with grey interior, this exciting XK is described as being in very good condition and comes with V5 document, MoT, invoices for works carried out and Jaguar Heritage Certificate.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
