This 1951 Jaguar XK120 is a black-over-red roadster that has been modified with dual Brooklands windscreens and a headrest fairing. The car is said to have been previously owned by Mike Tillson—a concours judge and owner of Tillson Motorcars—and the current owner purchased the vehicle in 2008. Power is supplied by a 3.4-liter inline-six linked with a four-speed manual transmission, and equipment includes dual SU carburetors, Lucas driving lights, a leather hood strap, chrome 16” wire wheels, bucket seats, lap belts, red carpeting, and Smiths gauges. The distributor cap, rotor, and spark plugs were replaced in December 2024. This XK120 roadster is now offered by the seller on behalf of the owner with service records from current ownership, a copy of the book Automobiles of the Chrome Age: 1946–1960 that features this car, a pair of black 1951 California license plates, and a clean California title.
The car has been repainted in black, and a matching headrest fairing stretches over the trunk lid. Dual Brooklands windscreens take the place of the usual windshield, and the car’s bumpers have been removed. The louvered hood is complemented by a leather securing strap. Other features include headlamp stone guards, Lucas driving lights, fender vents, and a polished exhaust outlet. A convertible top is not present.
Chrome 16” wire wheels feature knock-off hubs and are mounted with Michelin X tires measuring 185R16. The steering-idler box was rebuilt in 2018. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel drums, and the system’s master cylinder was replaced in 2018. The brake fluid was flushed in 2020, and the wheel bearings were replaced.
The cabin features fixed-back bucket seats with red leather upholstery complemented by color-coordinated door panels and carpeting. Amenities include red lap belts, a passenger-side grab handle, and door-panel storage pockets. The dashboard-mounted rearview mirror is shielded by a black metal faring.
The four-spoke steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation including a 140-mph speedometer, a reverse-sweep 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 47k miles, approximately 400 of which were added under current ownership. The speedometer was rebuilt in 2018.
The 3.4-liter DOHC inline-six was factory rated at 160 horsepower. The dual SU H6 carburetors were overhauled in 2017, and the throttle shafts were replaced. The water pump and the fan belt were replaced in 2018. The oil was changed most recently in January 2023, when the cooling system was flushed and a missing freeze plug was replaced. The distributor cap, rotor, and spark plugs were replaced in December 2024, and the choke was adjusted.
Serial number W3526-8 is stamped into the engine block as well as the cylinder head.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox. The clutch bearing and springs were replaced in 2018, the clutch system was bled in 2020, and the transmission fluid was changed in 2023.
A copy of the Michael Furman book Automobiles of the Chrome Age: 1946–1960 featuring images of this vehicle is included in the sale.
