Car to be at auction 1/10
    www.rmauctions.com/CarDetails.cfm

    Auction description:
    Automobiles of Arizona
    Thursday, January 21, 2010 - Friday, January 22, 2010
Thursday - The British Are Coming!
    1950 Jaguar XK120 Roadster
    Chassis No. 670266
This particular Jaguar XK120 Roadster left the factory on May 8, 1950, making it about the 80th steel-bodied car built. It bears all the hallmarks of an early steel car, including cam covers without front studs, a side-exit tailpipe, the absence of foot well ventilators and a short-deck convertible top with chrome plated top bows, as well as chrome plated parking lamps and seat frames. It was first restored in 1984 before an extensive photo-documented professional restoration was completed in 2007 (invoices available) with the objective of producing an XK120 that would be authentic in outward appearance, while incorporating a number of thoughtful internal changes to improve the overall driving experience.

Featuring a powder-coated frame and suspension components, this XK120 offers improved handling with the addition of a thicker SE-specification front anti-roll bar, polyurethane bushings, Koni adjustable front shock absorbers and Michelin X radial tires. The engine, which is a non-original but correct replacement unit from a Jaguar saloon of the same period, has been fitted with an NOS cylinder head from England, along with a pair of new SU carburetors supplied by Burlen Fuel Systems of England. Other improvements include a Pertronix breakerless ignition, a stainless steel exhaust, a flexible cooling fan, an enlarged radiator core, an aluminum fuel tank and a Borg-Warner JT5 five-speed overdrive transmission. In addition, the speedometer and odometer were converted from metric to U.S. units during the restoration process, with the last registered odometer reading accurately converted to its equivalent mileage.

The current owner, who purchased the Jaguar in 1984, has entered it into the 1995 and 1997 California Mille and the 2001 Colorado Grand. The car successfully completed all of these events. A Colorado car ever since it was imported to the United States from Belgium in 1966, the Jaguar also has numerous first- and second-place awards at local JCNA concours-level events to its credit. With approximately 1,000 miles of road testing and fine-tuning since completion of its latest restoration, this very well sorted example will certainly be a joy to show and drive for its next caretaker.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
