Brief History

The XK120 featured here is a stellar example of this most important car, a 1950 with an aluminum body. This is a fully documented car with all numbers correct and matching. This Jaguar has been recently fully restored and was returned to exact factory specifications with no stone left unturned in its authenticity. It has had only three owners since new and has been well cared for by each one. The present owner bought the car back in 1978 and drove for about ten years before placing it in storage. While in its slumber, authentic parts were sourced in preparation for its superb restoration. In the present day, it is finished in its correct factory colors and its painstaking attention to detail is evident in all aspects of its authenticity. This is certainly an alloy XK120 that all others could be judged against. While its condition is beyond reproach, its provenance as a rare car is also outstanding. Jaguar built just 224 aluminum bodied XK120s and of those 184 were exported to the United States. The XK120 was a fantastic car that left little to improve upon. The XK120 also has the distinction of being the only foreign car to win an early NASCAR road race with a victory by Al Keller at Linden Airport, New Jersey on June 13, 1954.

Interesting," exact factory specifications" wipers upside down,
later fog lamps, no rear view mirror, wire wheels.

...and a strange hole in the bonnet/hood.

How much else is not "exact factory specifications"? Is this why there are so few photos, unusual when selling a restored alloy car?

Authenticity issues or not, the Dragone auction website appears to show this car as sold for $418,000. And am I the only one who thinks the little hood scoop is actually kind of cool?

The scoop seems very neatly done, and it can be nice to see the odd personal touch on a car.

But when I see claims such as "the car was returned to exact factory specifications" is when I get irritated.

I like the little air scoop too, it's one of the nicer body mods I've seen done on a xk120. Rarely has "sales hype" ever had anything to do with true authenticity...

Quite true, alas !

Car to be at auction 8/16

Auction description:
Lot Number 135
1950 Jaguar XK 120 Alloy Roadster
$400,000 - $475,000
Monterey - Offered on: Friday, August 19, 2016
Chassis No.670132
Engine No. W 1270-8
Gearbox No. JH 1622
Body No.F 1173

The 132nd of only 184 left-hand drive alloy XK 120 roadsters built
Matching numbers throughout with fresh restoration
Three owners from new with two long-term single owners
Finished in its original colors of Black over Biscuit

According to the accompanying Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, the alloy roadster on offer today was built on 13 February 1950 and delivered to Jaguar Cars in Brussels, Belgium. It was finished in Black with a two-tone Biscuit leather interior, and a black convertible top. The first owner was Guy Gernay, who would own it for 28 years.

Gernay later moved to the Northeastern United States, and a photograph exists of him racing the XK 120 at Bridgehampton in the 1960s. It is believed that an air scoop was installed in the front of the hood at that time to combat engine cooling problems that afflicted XK 120s when they were raced. Wire wheels were not available until 1951, but they resolved critical brake overheating issues, and it seems likely that the black painted wires on this car were fitted at the same time. The wire wheels also required the rear fender skirts to be removed since the knock-off spinners would not fit behind the skirts. The Jaguar has since been fitted with black painted disc wheels as well as the attractive fender spats.

The second owner of 670132 was Rick Camparetto of Long Island, New York, who bought the car in 1978. He drove it for 10 years then commissioned a thorough, documented restoration of the car, assembling as many new old-stock pieces as possible and being careful to retain its original black finish and tan leather interior. The current owner acquired the car in 2014.

The consignor reports that XK 120 specialist Terry McGrath recently visited chassis number 670132 and spent two weeks studying the car in detail. Having seen most of the 242 aluminum-bodied XK 120s in person, the consignor noted that McGrath was impressed by the originality of this matching-numbers car, which is accompanied by such items as its original side screens, top frame, and skirts.

This handsome and desirable roadster is accompanied by substantial records, invoices, and a JDHT Certificate. With proven race history, the new owner can decide whether he or she wants to show the car at concours events, or compete in important historic events for which it is eligible, such as the Mille Miglia. It is bound to be welcome wherever it appears, and to deliver thrills to the driver, navigator, and spectators alike.

This exceptional 1950 Jaguar XK120 Alloy Roadster represents one of just 242 alloy-bodied examples built. Constructed on February 13, 1950, chassis 670132 was originally delivered to Jaguar Cars in Brussels, Belgium, and elegantly factory-finished in black with a two-tone Biscuit leather interior and black convertible top, as documented by its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust (JDHT) Certificate.

The first owner of this Alloy Roadster was Guy Gernay, who retained the Jaguar for 28 years, eventually importing it to the US. A photo in the vehicle’s history file shows the XK120 during Mr. Gernay’s ownership sporting wire wheels, center knock-offs, and an air scoop on the hood – a configuration suggesting the car may have been used as a gentleman racer.

In 1978, this XK120 passed to its second owner, Rick Camparetto of Long Island, New York. After a decade of ownership, Mr. Camparetto commissioned a meticulous restoration of the car. The matching-numbers engine was restored to its original specifications, and the car was finished in its striking black exterior and Biscuit leather interior, while still retaining its recognizable hood scoop. Finishing touches included period, black painted-disc wheels as well as rear fender spats. Now offered with just four owners from new, this beautifully restored XK120 is accompanied by a soft top, side curtains, jack, tool roll, records, and JDHT Certificate.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
