Auction description:
2017 Shannons Sydney Summer Classic Auction & Rare Number Plates.
Lot 19
1951 Jaguar XK 120 Roadster
Guiding Range: $60,000 - $80,000
Australian-delivered XK120 Roadster
Lovely car with fabulous patina
One long-term owner for many years
No reserve
Purchased from Kanahooka nsw australia via Ian Cummins in 1975 and restored with xk150 mechanicals from a wreck from Coonabarabran.
Documented in Terry McGrath and John Elmgreen's essential reference work The Jaguar XK in Australia, chassis 660772 originally left Browns Lane in red with duo-tone biscuit/red upholstery before being delivered through Bryson Industries, the Victorian Jaguar agents. The car had several Victorian owners before ending up with Universal Auto Wreckers in the Wollongong area circa 1968 in very neglected condition, missing the drivetrain and both front guards. The current owner's father rescued the XK120 in 1975 and slowly rebuilt the car, incorporating a number of parts sourced from a donor XK150; these included the engine, close-ratio gearbox, front and rear disc brakes, wire wheels and diff. The motor was overhauled in 1990 with new pistons and a cylinder head from a Mark V, while replacement front wings were sourced from another XK120. Cosmetically, the Hawthorn Green paint (a subtle grey-green hue) applied many years ago has cracks and scratches evident in several places, while the leather upholstery was retrimmed in brown leather many years ago and exhibits wear consistent with the rest of the car, as do the carpets and door trims. Currently on club plates, the Jaguar has been driven regularly over the years (the vendor even drove the XK120 from the NSW South Coast to the Shannons office in St Leonards) and is reluctantly offered for sale, as the late owner's son has his own collection of classic Jaguars and no longer has the space to keep the car. This wonderful XK120 has developed a lovely patina over the years and presents the buyer with a number of options - to simply leave the car as is cosmetically (perhaps with painted wires) while bringing it up to scratch mechanically. Alternatively the Jaguar would be a worthy recipient of a full concours level restoration - the choice is up to you. To be sold unregistered, the car comes with a workshop manual and some history and will be offered at No Reserve.
