Car was at auction in '99

www.classic-auctions.com/Auctions/14-04-1999-ThePavilionGardens-1020/1959JaguarX ...

Auction description:

Classic Cars, H&H Classic Auctions Ltd (14th April 1999) Pavilion Gardens, Buxton

1959 Jaguar XK150 S 3.4 Litre Fixed Head Coupe

Estimate £14000-£16000

Hammer Price £17000

Condition rating 1

Lot Number: 48

Reg Number: UAM 711

Chassis Number: T824981D/N

Engine Number: VS20709

Cc: 3442

Body Colour: Cotswold Blue

Trim Colour: Navy Blue

MOT ExpiryDate: 20.4.1999

This excellent 1959 Jaguar XK150 'S' fixed head coupe has been the cherished possession of the present private lady owner since 1992. Prior to that the previous owner had kept the car for twenty five years and during that time he had spent over three years completing a chassis up restoration after which his circumstances changed forcing him to part with this superb car to the present owner.

It is the much rarer and more desirable 'S' version with the 3442 six cylinder engine and the manual four speed gearbox with overdrive and the bodywork is beautifully painted in Cotswold Blue whilst the interior, which is original, is excellent in the complimentary colour of Navy Blue. During the restoration the headlining, boot lining and carpets were replaced and as far as we are aware the only faults with this car are a slight knock to the rear quarter, where the previous owner on the first time out of his garage damaged the paintwork and there is a crack to the windscreen that was in evidence when the previous owner bought the car - some thirty odd years ago.

This excellent and very desirable car comes with a current M.O.T. certificate until the 20th of this month, a V5 registration document and the original logbook confirming what would seem to be the original registration number of UAM 711. Coming as it does with the original sunroof this is a most sought after car and will be very keenly contested at the sale.

Note that in "The XK Magazine" Jan/Feb/Mar 1998, from the Jaguar Enthusiasts' Club, page 8, Paul Skilleter reported on his very recent acquisition of 824951. However, the photo in that publication was wrongly captioned by reference to 824981.

I am the lucky purchaser of this car and the car is now being recommissioned. I would like to track its history prior to 1992. The rear number plate has J Butterfield on it - presumably John Butterfield. Also would the webasto roof be original or an aftermarket fix? The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
