*Formerly the property of author James Leasor

*Further interesting Italian history

*Engine built by the late Tim Waddington

*Delightful colour combination – interior re-trimmed

At one stage owned by thriller writer James Leasor, the story of this Italian-market XK150 would be enough to occupy at least one entire chapter. Our vendor notes that it was sold new in Italy and came back to the UK in 1970, when it was bought by Mr Leasor. It changed hands twice before heading West to the USA, although its history from there remains sketchy at the very least. What is known, however, is that it was re-registered in the UK in 2009, and subsequently restored by Peter Hannen, while XK guru the late Tim Waddington handled the re-building the engine and gearbox, and it said to still run strongly, the vendor reports. Externally the bodywork is good and while an older restoration it presents well, but there is some paint-cracking on the wing tops. The interior has been completely re-trimmed with the seats, dashboard, door cards and carpet in excellent order and the trim said to be very good. Starting and running very well and otherwise good mechanically this is an immensely usable example that should truly delight its new owner.

Once owned by author James Leasor this 150's engine was re-built by the late Tim Waddington and it is reported to be running well. The older body restoration has lasted well and the interior has been completely re-trimmed.

Chassis Number: S836559DN

Engine: 3800

Gearbox: manual

Steering position: LHD

Colour: British Racing Green

Interior: Red Leather

Estimated Price: £39,000 - £44,000

This car has the later 3.8-litre iteration of the fabulous XK straight six engine, regarded by many as the best version of the legendary powerplant. The current owner bought the car with the intention of taking it to Spain, but his plans have now changed. He says:

‘It starts and runs perfectly. The chassis looks like new and the interior also looks new. There are some paint bubbles here and there which could be treated with not too much expenditure, but this does not affect the fact that it is a very useable classic car.

‘I had all the wheels blasted and re-powder coated, fixed the brake lights and a couple of other small items so that it passed its MoT. I believe it all to be standard, although I do not believe it is a matching numbers car. I think that for someone that wants a solid, good running classic XK150 coupé then this car will give a lot of pleasure. It’s great for wafting along in comfort with loads of torque, and a beautiful noise from its 3.8-litre straight six.’

On the Outside

This XK looks straight and true and presents very well overall. But there are some paint bodywork defects. There are various bubbles in the paint visible on close inspection. We think these are the result of imperfect preparation prior to painting rather than rust, but obviously this can only be verified by stripping the finish.

The seam between the rear wings and body tub are also in need of fettling, but all the brightwork is in good order, although there are fixing points visible on the doors that would be covered by door mirrors, which aren’t present. If you’re looking to enter concours contests then the car will need repainting, but if you want a useable XK150 that you’re not scared to leave in the pub car park for half an hour, this is for you.

On the Inside

There are no such faults in here, as the cabin is in superb condition, with beautiful red leather seats, immaculate carpets and a lovely dashboard, completed by that timelessly elegant Jaguar steel spoked steering wheel.

Unlike some XK150s, the dash in this car is covered in leather, rather than walnut veneer, which was optional. It’s all in fabulous condition, too, and we can’t see that any improvements are necessary in the cabin – it’s a lovely place to be.

Underneath

The chassis certainly looks very good, with no obvious problems that we could see.

This car has the optional four wheel disc brakes fitted, making it more suited to modern traffic conditions than earlier XKs. The engine starts easily and sounds smooth, with no excess tappet noise or untoward signs. Cosmetically the engine bay is in very nice order

History Highlights

Originally sold in Italy, this XK150 was once owned by British author James Leasor, who was clearly a bit of a petrolhead, judging by the many photographs of him with various classic cars. He bought the car in 1970 when it returned from Italy. It then changed hands twice before heading West to the USA, although its history from there is sketchy.

What is known, however, is that it was re-registered in the UK in 2009, and subsequently restored by Peter Hannen, while XK guru, the late Tim Waddington, handled the re-building of the engine and gearbox. The interior has also been completely retrimmed.

The car comes with lots of historic photographs and some invoices for parts and services over the years. It also has a recent MoT certificate.

Tax and MOT status Tax and MOT exempt

Dating from November 1959 this attractive XK150 SE FHC is a LHD example and is finished in Grand Prix Green with traditional brown leather bonnet strap and centre knock on wire wheels, also finished in dark green which really sets the car apart.

Under the bonnet, we find the 3.8 litre straight-six-cylinder engine with twin SU carbs suggesting the car to be an SE variant which developed 220Bhp when new, driving the rear wheels via manual transmission with overdrive.

Inside, we find a wonderful recently re-trimmed Oxblood red leather interior with matching red carpets and grey central instrument cluster trim.

The car started and ran as it should on site while moving it around for these images, holding good oil pressure as shown in the images, looking very sleek and attractive.

The history file includes a note from the vendor of works undertaken during and prior to his ownership. This included a re-condition for the engine and gearbox in 2009, a new steering rack and ball joints, new discs with new calipers all round, new shocks, new rear leaf springs, new hand brake cable and assembly, new exhaust, new alternator and battery as well as the beautifully re-trimmed interior including new rubber seals for the doors and windows – much of which is recent, and documented within the history file.

The mileage to date from the 1st MOT in the UK looks to be just over 3,000. The car has come in from Europe with time spent in Italy with its then English owner after some earlier time during the 90s spent in Virginia, USA.

The file includes copies of the Virginia US Certificate of Title along with a host of correspondence relating to purchase and subsequent theft (including trailer and tow vehicle) in Italy in 2014 before being recovered in Germany in 2019 by the British owner who’s determination to find his car paid off.

The V5C on file shows five UK owners. The car has been with our vendor since purchase in September 2022 (the sale a reluctant one due to arthritis). The copy of the old buff log book shows the car to have been UK registered as 727 BNG during the 1970s. Also present are the aforementioned US Titles, current MOT (although of course exempt) valid until May 2025 recording no advisories and a rack of bills for works undertaken.

A lovely, and very smart example of this slick and powerful Coupe, on offer at an attractive estimate.
