This car was owned by Mr Gardner, whose company manufactured diesel engines for boats, tractors and goods vehicles. A few were fitted in motor cars. Mr Gardner fitted one of his diesel engines into his XK 150 in the late 1950's. Apparently, he persuaded Sir William Lyons to take a test drive in it. Sir William was not impressed with the acceleration (!), but it was remarkably economical. It appears that the car exists today, albeit not roadworthy, and that it retains its diesel engine. A true one-off.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
