This Jaguar XK140 SE DHC is a sought-after and timelessly elegant classic British roadster, benefitting from a historic restoration.

Under the bonnet sits a naturally aspirated 3.4-litre DOHC straight-six with a ‘Type C’ cylinder head, delivering around 213PS to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.

This example was originally a US-delivered model, which was manufactured in October 1955 before being delivered and registered in Los Angeles, California in March 1956.

It was purchased by its second Californian owner in November 1964 and is understood to have entered long-term storage following a minor traffic accident (right-hand front wing) where it remained from 1964 until 1995.

The car was then imported into France in 1995 by the seller and reportedly its third owner, and it underwent an extensive restoration before being registered in March 2000.

The odometer indicates 28,790 miles, though this is not warranted.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

As a ‘Special Equipment’ model, this XK140 features the sought-after ‘Type C’ cylinder head from the factory, which significantly improved performance from the straight-six engine.

This example was originally specified with Cream paintwork and a French Grey roof over a Green Suede-trimmed interior, but is now presented in a timeless shade of black with a beige roof, over a cream leather-trimmed interior, featuring a wood-trimmed dashboard and window surrounds, and chrome trim highlights.

It rides on a set of 16-inch chrome cross-spoke wire wheels with two-spoke knock-offs, fitted with Michelin Pilote X tyres.

Equipment includes twin front spotlights, Smiths gauges, a locking glove compartment, door card storage pouches, and push-out front quarter light windows.

The original owner installed a Derrington aluminium and wood-rimmed steering wheel, and a Motorola hybrid car radio with a retractable antenna fixed in the right-hand rear quarter panel, though the latter has since been removed.

It has more recently been enhanced with a disc brake conversion, and uprated engine cooling courtesy of an expansion tank and a two-speed BMW electric fan.

The car comes with two keys, a California State registration card dated to 1964, an Operating, Maintenance and Service handbook, the maintenance chart, on-board tools, and the 1958 Motorola hybrid radio with elliptical speaker and telescopic external antenna, which has been refurbished but not reinstalled.

SERVICE HISTORY

This XK140’s most recent maintenance was carried out in 2023, and consisted of a standard service.

An extensive restoration was carried out in France between 1995 and 2000.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
