Car to be at RM auction, Monterey, California 8/08
www.rmauctions.com/

Auction description:
1955 Jaguar XK 140MC Drop Head Coupe
LOT: 215
Estimate:
$70,000-$90,000 US
Chassis No. S817316
Offered without reserve

210bhp, 3,442 cc, twin-overhead cam inline six-cylinder engine with C-Type cylinder head, four-speed manual transmission, torsion bar independent front and rear leaf spring suspension, four-wheel drum brakes. Wheelbase: 96"

The XK140 presented here is a Drop Head Coupe, which was one of the most expensive in the entire Jaguar range. With its walnut woodwork and luxuriously padded soft-top, the Drop Head set new standards of luxury for open cockpit touring. This particular example is an MC version fitted with the C-type cylinder head and was purchased by its present owner five years ago before being subjected to restoration work beginning in 2003. It has been driven and enjoyed ever since. Finished in Maroon with Biscuit Connolly leather upholstery and Wilton carpeting, the car was professionally repainted and the interior was thoroughly restored. In addition to the standard MC features, including dual exhausts, wire wheels, and fog lights, the car was also fitted with an electronic choke and an electric radiator and fan for improved drivability.

Because of the relatively low production of the XK 140 Drop Head Coupes, the combination of one with the M or Special Equipment package and C-type head is particularly rare and desirable – a combination exemplified in this restored and beautifully presented XK 140.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
