This 1957 Jaguar is a fine example of a DRIVEN CLASS auto. It has been shown in both Driven and Concours categories and has won Best in Class trophies in both.
During a period of about two and a half years the present owner did a comprehensive rebuild short of removing the body from the chassis. The engine was removed; totally disassembled, the block boiled out, all oil passages were cleaned, cylinders were bored thirty thousandths (0.030) and proper oversize pistons installed. Virtually all internal parts were replaced; new oil pump, timing chains and gears, main and crank bearings. The cylinder head was rebuilt; new valve seats, guides and valves installed. On assembly, new gaskets and seals were installed.
The water pump was rebuilt with a four vane impellor installed to assist in greater coolant flow. The radiator was rebuilt with a heavy duty core, a coolant recovery system installed. An auxiliary electric cooling fan was adapted for use in extreme conditions.
This car was restored to be driven and not as a museum piece. To this end, a new and modern electric system was designed and installed. To meet modern standards, the system in now negative ground. The troublesome Lucas generator and voltage regulator was replaced by an easily obtainable Delco alternator with an internal voltage regulator. All connectors are of high quality and modern design. The original wiring used four (4) fuses to protect the car. This re-designed system has twelve (12). The troublesome SU fuel pump was replace with an in-line unit. The rusty fuel tank was replaced. The SU carburetors were overhauled.
The brake system was rebuilt, new linings installed. All brake lines were purged, cleaned and flushed. All wheel cylinders and the master cylinder was rebuilt. To prevent future difficulty, silicon brake fluid was installed.
New seventy-two (72) spoke, chrome wire wheels and new B. F. Goodrich tires (an original brand) installed. The rear wheel hubs were rebuilt. The steering rack was rebuilt and new tie rod ends installed.
After the mechanical work was complete and the car driving; the body was stripped of all chrome accents, the bumpers removed, and any sheet metal that could be removed, as well. Any rust was cut away or ground out and new steel installed. Where fill was necessary, lead was used, as had been done at the factory. There is no plastic filler (Bondo) on the automobile. The body was stripped to bare metal before being primed.
Since the engine was started after its rebuild in 1987, the car has been driven less than 16,000 miles.
This Jaguar was one of several autos featured on THE LEARNING CHANNEL production Extreme Machines Super Cars. A VCR tape will be provided to the purchaser.
