According to its Certificate of Authenticity from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust, this ravishing XK140 was built on September 22, 1955, and was dispatched to the US on October 17th that year. Imported to Charles Hornburg's renowned Los Angeles dealership, this Jaguar was purchased new by Senator Eugene D. Ivy, a state senator based in Yakima, Washington, who served four terms in office between 1953 and 1960. Senator Ivy was surely captivated by the XK140's desirable and substantial SE option package. Included in the list of cosmetic features were fog lamps, long-range driving lamps and wire wheels. The SE package also offered factory mechanical upgrades, such as dual-exhaust pipes and the C-Type cylinder head, a component from the Le Mans-winning race car that raised brake horsepower by 20 hp over the base model.

In 1996 the Jaguar was purchased by the consignor, a Kentucky collector who has since restored the car to its current presentation. The Antique Auto Shop of Hebron, Kentucky, was retained to conduct the restorative work, which included mechanical refurbishing, as well as paint and interior work. Since the restoration, this Jaguar has been regularly serviced and maintained as needed by Clay Cook and his restoration house in Erlanger, Kentucky, that over the past 30 years has developed a reputation for restoring and preparing show cars worthy of the finest concours d'elegance including Pebble Beach.

As one of the earlier examples of the XK140 Fixed Head Coupe, this car features the desirable aluminum boot, bonnet and doors, body components that were lined with steel after October 1956. The use of aluminum in the earlier cars resulted in performance dividends that were not to be found in later examples.

Optioned with the long-legged Laycock de Normanville overdrive, this handsomely finished XK140 is accompanied by a tool kit, spare tire, tire pump, jack, a thorough log of service records and its JDHT heritage certificate.

Gleaming in its red paint and offering trademark Jaguar elegance with its roomy cockpit and walnut burl veneer dashboard trim, this XK140 is a numbers-matching example that vibrantly demonstrates the marque's renowned synergy of sporty luxury and Le Mans-winning pedigree.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
