Description from above auction.
www.russoandsteele.com/collector_car/1956_jaguar_xk140mc/6131.html

Offered here is one of the desirable XK 140 MC models fitted with the competition C-type heads, competition carburetors, and dual exhaust. Meticulously restored and shown in many JNCA sanctioned events, this stunning OTS for "open two-seater" sports removable side curtains and complete soft-top that folds behind the seats.
This particular car also sports the highly desirable power upgrade package most commonly referred to as the "MC". Although introduced with the larger horsepower option, utilizing essentially the C-Type cylinder head, the New York Motoring Press created a bit of confusion with an early trim package on the XK 120. Jaguar factory literature has always referred to the XK 140 with the optional upgrades as an SE, for "Special Equipment," and never "MC."

Apparently this nomenclature mix up arose due to the fact that Jaguar had offered an "M" trim package for U.S.-market XK 120s that added wire wheels, a dual exhaust, and fog lamps. The XK 140 was indeed available with ALL these upgrades; in addition to the C-type head were commonly dubbed by the American press as the "MC" package.
This improved package was responsible for a 20 or more horsepower gain over the standard 140, using the same design components as the C-type factory team cars built to campaign at Le Mans. Hence the "Le Mans Replica" badge proudly adorning the passenger site of the handsome dash, just under the grab handle.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
