Car to be at auction 6/09
www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/public.sh/pubweb/publicSite.r
Auction description:
1955 Jaguar XK 140SE Open Two-Seater (OTS)
Chassis no. S811380
Engine no. G 3437-8S
The offered 1955 OTC is a documented SE (Special Equipment) model. This factory upgrade added a "C"-type cylinder head and dual exhausts to the XK-140's 3.4L DOHC inline six. The SE engine was rated at 210 horsepower, the standard engine at 190.
Provenance accompanying the XK-140SE establishes that original owner A. F. Edmandson, of North Hollywood, California, purchased the car on Sept. 6, 1955. (The California “black plate” issued with the first registration remains with the car.) The Jaguar had apparently been parked for at least seven years before Donald Brucker of La Jolla became its second known owner in 1986. Mr. Brucker kept the Jaguar until late 2003, when the XK-140SE was obtained for the present owner through the auspices of Doc's Jags of Arizona. The marque specialist shop was subsequently commissioned to perform a frame-off professional restoration, completed in 2007.
Its Jaguar-Daimler Heritage Trust certificate confirms that S811380 was built with Special Equipment engine G 3437-8S. Completed on May 3, 1955, the XK-140SE was forthwith shipped to U.S. West Coast Jaguar distributor Charles Hornburg. The JDHT certificate further reveals the car was originally Pastel Blue, with blue interior and top.
Today, the XK-140SE is resplendently cloaked in Jaguar “Claret” burgundy, with its interior trimmed in rich tan Connolly leather and Wilton wool carpeting. The top was also specially fabricated for the car. Dayton stainless-spoke chromed wire wheels, mounted with wide whitewall radial tires, add to the car's 1950s Hollywood aura, while the dual fog lamps are proper to the SE model.
During the extensive restoration, the car's SE engine was completely rebuilt and further upgraded with two-inch SU H8 carburetors, an original SE performance option. Electrics were upgraded with an alternator and solid-state ignition. An aluminum radiator with auxiliary fan provides enhanced cooling. Front disc brakes and a 5-speed gearbox have also been added. (The original matching numbers 4-speed accompanies the car.) Fewer than 500 miles have been logged since the restoration was completed.
The Jaguar XK-140SE OTS is presented with a Connecticut title in the vendor's name. Various prior ownership records, plus complete invoices and photos pertaining to the restoration, are included in the sale.
Estimate: $125,000 - 150,000
