A fascinating reference to this car and first owner George F Rolfe in a Road Test report in Sports Illustrated in 1955 in Anders Clausager's new book on 140/150 available from JDHT in UK

I can only add the article was written by John Bentley. I would guess the timing would be around Dec 54 to April 1955

Wondering if Anders Clausager would have more info?

using the reference #11 it is in "Sports Illustrated" 25 April 1955 and for Anders to have quoted it it is almost certain he has a copy of the article - I don't think it appears in the Brooklands books of the other series of road test reprints. I certainly would love to see a copy of road test. Do we know who George F Rolfe is?

As per the JDHT certificate for the car, George Rolffe was the first owner. I believe I have every other road test of the 140. Will email Anders in hope of obtaining a copy of the SI test. Just received the 140/150 book the other day and have not had time to thoroughly absorb it & therefore missed the reference. Thanks everyone for your help so far.

Just received copy of Sports Illustrated for 4/25/55. A photo in the article changes the course of the restoration. Apparently the car was delivered with wires painted body color and blackwall tires. Chrome wires and whitewalls will go by the wayside. Anders Clausager sent an email stating only four cars were produced in Cream, Red interior, Fawn hood, C head & overdrive.

Opening bid US $99,000.00 Reserve not met 0 bids, 6 days left in auction, seller 62409, 47k miles, Homosassa, Florida
Seller's description:
1955 Jaguar XK140 Open Two Seater with MC option and somewhat rare overdrive. Body off restoration completed several years ago. All numbers match the Heritage Certificate. Chassis and suspension powder coated. Stainless steel "sport" exhaust. Solid state voltage regulator and flasher unit. All instruments rebuilt by Nissonger. Interior by BAS. Vrededstein tires. All new correct wiring by Rhode Island Wiring. Evans waterless coolant. New canvas top - rear window was not installed correctly - too low - comes with new insert to reposition if desired. Tool roll is a mix of new and old and is missing box spanners. Car runs beautifully and was used for the road test in the April 25,1955 issue of Sports Illustrated. I have owned the car for almost forty years, I'm in my late 70's and of late it is not driven as much as it should be therefore reluctantly it is time for a new caretaker.

This 1955 Jaguar XK140 MC roadster was delivered new in late 1954 through Max Hoffman in New York and was later featured in a road test that appeared in the April 25, 1955, issue of Sports Illustrated magazine. Chassis S810507DN subsequently underwent a multi-year refurbishment completed in the mid-2010s that involved a repaint in white along, an interior re-trim in red leather, and mechanical work. The car is powered by a 3.4-liter inline-six equipped with a C-type cylinder head and dual SU carburetors, while shifting is through a four-speed manual gearbox paired with a Laycock de Normanville overdrive unit. Further details include Lucas auxiliary lights and 16″ wire wheels along with a split windshield and adjustable seats. Acquired by the current owner in 2022, this XK140 is now offered on their behalf by the seller with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Production Record Trace certificate, a copy of the magazine issue featuring the car, an owner’s manual, service records, a tool kit, spare parts, and a clean New Jersey title in the owner’s name.
The car left the factory finished in Cream and was stripped, underwent metal work, and repainted white as part of the aforementioned refurbishment. Lucas auxiliary lights are equipped up front, and dual side mirrors are fitted to the split windshield. Additional details include dual exhaust outlets as well as full-width chrome bumpers with overriders. The accompanying removable soft top and side curtains are said to require refurbishment.
The 16″ wire wheels are secured with two-ear knock-offs and mounted with 235/60 Vredestein tires. A full-size spare is stored under the trunk floor. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel drums, which were overhauled in 2015.
The adjustable seats have been re-trimmed in red leather, and color-coordinated upholstery covers the dash, center armrest, and doors. Interior appointments include a cabin heater, a defroster, wind-up side windows, and door storage pockets as well as a folding rear bulkhead.
A four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of Smiths instrumentation consisting of a reverse-sweep tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline and an inset clock along with a 140-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 9k miles, approximately 150 of which have been added under current ownership.
The MC 3.4-liter inline-six is equipped with a C-type cylinder head as well as dual SU H8 carburetors. US-specification MC models were factory rated at 220 horsepower.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with a Laycock de Normanville overdrive unit.
The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Production Record Trace certificate lists factory colors and drivetrain numbers and notes a build date of December 17, 1954, as well as initial delivery through Max Hoffman in New York.
The car was used for a road test that appeared in the April 25, 1955, issue of Sports Illustrated magazine, a copy of which is included in the sale.
