Car was at auction in '05

    Auction description:
Lot 1051: 1955 Jaguar XK 140SE Open Two Seater Roadster
Quail Lodge Motor Cars, Bonhams & Butterfields (19th August 2005)
    Overview
Fixed and Drophead Coupés outnumber XK 140 Roadsters. Even the spare and elemental roadster saw the effect of Jaguar’s move upscale as the enhanced Special Equipment model, the XK 140SE, received equipment and appearance upgrades but, in its standard form, the regular XK 140 engine rated at an additional 10 horsepower through use of different 1 3/4” SU carburetors. SE equipment included wire wheels, dual exhausts, windshield wipers and fog lights as well as a more fully-finished trunk.

The 1955 XK 140SE Open Two Seater Roadster offered here is a non-C head motorcar in SE configuration. Restored in the 1990’s, it is particularly attractive in its Red over Biscuit leather livery. It has recently been prepared by a Jaguar specialist who has incorporated mechanical upgrades for reliable performance while freshening the restoration to its present fine condition. He is very complimentary of its operation (it “runs and drives excellently”) and it will be supplied with a set of OEM driving lights, full set of tools, jack, and factory brochures.

Recent Mechanical Freshening with Tasteful Upgrades

Few British sports cars strike such a dynamic pose as Jaguar's lauded XK140, which many enthusiasts hold to be the most versatile of the XKs. Pairing its timeless exterior design with a roomier interior, this elegant roadster example is certainly no exception, with recent mechanical measures supplementing an earlier cosmetic restoration.

According to the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, the car was built at the Coventry, England, Jaguar plant near the end of 1954 and dispatched to the US distributor Hoffman Motor Car Co. on December 29, 1954. It was finished in a period cream exterior color with a red interior featuring fawn-colored weather equipment. The car's first owner was Miami Beach, Florida, resident Albert B. Gross.

Although the subsequent history remains unknown, the XK is believed to have lived much of its life in southern climates until acquired in the mid-2000s by an Arizona dealer of classic Jaguars after a cosmetic restoration. The consignor, a collector based in Scottsdale, Arizona, purchased the XK in 2006 and immediately set about commissioning mechanical work through the dealership, including a brake system rebuild, and the installation of a five-speed gearbox for comfortable high-speed cruising. New chrome wire wheels and carpets were fitted, while a new top and side curtains were sourced.

In 2007, the consignor commissioned additional measures, including installing elastomeric suspension bushings, a stainless steel exhaust system, and an aluminum fuel tank. Electrical components were overhauled with the addition of an alternator, a high-voltage solidstate ignition system, and a heavy-duty starter.

Most significantly, in 2011 the consignor undertook a refurbishment of the engine, deemed to be the motor's first restoration. He also took the opportunity to install a new clutch and pressure plate, new SU carburetors, an aluminum radiator, and a supplementary electric cooling fan, ensuring that this beautiful XK Roadster's performance power matches its arresting appearance.

Offered with the Special Equipment package, which includes fog lamps and dual exhaust pipes, this dashing XK140 is accompanied by a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate of authenticity and receipts of recent work. An excellent candidate for local exhibition that will showcase the considerable merits of one of Britain's most adored opentop performers.
