The coupe is a gorgeous body design and the “M” is the rare high-performance version of the fabulous XK-120. Ours is just such a car which we purchased from the enthusiast who bought it in 1969 from Grossman Motorcars--the Maserati/Porsche dealer in Nyack, New York. Finished in red with black leather, it is a fully numbers-correct car with fabulously refinished burl walnut facia and interior trim and new correct headliner, wool carpets and rubber seals with original 16” “knock-off” wire wheels, new stainless steel twin exhaust, twin Lucas fog lamps and twin wing-mounted rear-view mirrors. This car has seen very little use over the past 38 years, but has been used a little bit each year and just had a full engine head rebuild this year. Actual mileage is unknown since the speedometer was rebuilt and set to zero, but many records are present with the car along with its original owner’s and shop manuals.

Here is my 1953 Jaguar XK120 SE Fixed Head Coupe. This car is a factory special equipment car with 1" torsion bars , high lift cams and super sport exhaust.This is a fully numbers matching car and still retains its original chassis, data plate, and body tag. The car received a restoration about 12-15 years ago and the paint and interior show well as a driver quality. The engine and gearbox were completely overhauled and are in excellent condition. The Engine runs smooth, quiet , doesn't burn any oil, has great oil pressure and pulls hard. The Clutch and gearbox are smooth and tight with no grinding or noises. The brakes are in top shape as well it stops quick and straight. There is no overheating issues as well. The interior shows well with newer carpets and a perfect headliner. All the lights and controls work as they should with the exception of the fog lights currently. Included is the factory jack and a partial tool kit. The car is currently registered titled and insured in my name.

1953 Jaguar XK120 SE FHC

The Vehicle

This stunning XK120 SE is an early fixed-head coupe – but a late example of Jaguar’s first 120+ mph sportscar. The fixed-head style was added from 1952 with the drop-head cabriolet arriving a year later. This example has undergone some recent remedial restoration of its bodywork, focussing on the floors, B-posts and doors. The panel shut lines in these areas therefore appear very crisp, accurate and uniform. The doors open and close with a reassuringly accurate ‘thunk’.

A build trace certificate from Jaguar Heritage Trust places the exact date of manufacture as February 19, 1953. Once it left the factory (in left-hand drive) it was shipped to New York where it was offered for sale by the Hoffman Auto Showroom on Park Avenue. 

Set amid the striking architecture of this (now sadly demolished) Frank Lloyd Wright building, it didn’t take long to attract its first state-side buyer. The car was repatriated by the vendor in 2018 and shortly after underwent extensive recommissioning.

On the Outside

Originally painted in Pastel Blue, this XK has since been refinished in a striking shade of red by one of its former American owners. Sadly, the car’s history didn’t accompany it when it came across the pond, so we don’t know who carried out the work, but the finish appears to be excellent. If we're really picky as we did notice a bend to the lower front valence and a crack in the paint along the nearside edge of the bonnet, minor blemishes to what is a VERY fine-looking machine.

The wonderful period wire wheels appear in splendid condition. The vendor reports that he’s only recently replaced all five tyres (including the spare) with a matching set of 15-inch Pirelli Cinturato tyres plus new tubes, valves and balancing at a cost of nearly £2,000. Chromework around this near 70-year-old Jaguar is in excellent shape. Hub spinners, wing-mounted mirrors, huge quad headlights and grille slats look resplendent - and quite fitting - for such an historically important piece of British sports car history.

On the Inside

Opening the doors, you’re met with an interior that’s highly presentable and welcoming. There’s patina aplenty from the door card material to the front seat bases. Speaking of the latter, there’s also small (repair?) stitching to the back of both front seats and a patch of leather stuck to the nearside edge of the driver’s backrest. Elsewhere the bases show their age in the leather, and the passenger-side has a hole which is suspiciously cigarette-sized.

The commissioned work to the doors and B-posts are documented by photos included with the car and it’s clear that the welding and painting was done to a high standard and the fabrication appears to have been carried out very professionally. The vendor has reported that the rev-counter has begun to operate sporadically but other than that, everything operates as it should.

Underneath

The recent work to the underside is backed up by the condition of the floors and sills. They look in fantastic shape with plenty of weather protection, likely to keep them this way for many years to come. Mechanical components are covered in the light oil mist you’d expect for a classic British sports car, with no areas exhibiting signs of excessive fluid leaks. Quite the opposite in fact. The underseal is liberal in places including the upper front suspension and steering components.

The engine bay presents well with this XK’s clean and tidy rocker covers and spark plug wells shining bright. A Kenlowe fan has been added to the radiator to keep things cool at the push of a button or thermostatically-triggered temperature. Even the correct period twin-SU carburettors still exhibit their oil-bathed air filters. It’s all appears to be original and tidy under here. The car starts cleanly and keenly and runs and drives well.

History Highlights

The V5C shows zero former keepers and a build date of 1953. Hardly a surprise as the car was only first registered over here when it entered the UK in 2018.

The vendor reports that the recent body restoration was carried out by Heritage Classics in Teesside and totalled about £22k. The work included fitting and painting new sills, door posts, floors, all seals and carpets and reassembly. The vendor also reports that electronic ignition has been fitted and its powered by a brand-new high-output battery (that's £200 alone).

Upon returning to the UK shores in 2018, it was decided that this LHD XK120 deserved far more attention than initially planned. 

Not one to half-cook a job, the current keeper ensured the vehicle was extensively restored, courtesy of renowned specialist; Heritage Classics of Teeside. Since being restored, the vehicle has hardly covered any miles and now yearns to be enjoyed by the lucky new owner. 

All details of the restoration can be found in the included photographs and invoices, which detail new parts, and work carried out. 

Also included within the paperwork, are the V5C document, import/registration documentation, and the Jaguar heritage certificate, which helps verify the vehicle’s history. 

The Interior

Although the vehicle was given a very thorough restoration, the current owner decided to retain the original seats, and as many original components as possible. 

Not looking to strip this coupe of any charm and history, keeping the original seats proved to be quite a welcome decision.

As the seats are of course rather old now, the leather does show signs of age and use, particularly in the form of a tear on the driver’s seat. Despite the shown defects, retaining the original seats certainly helps this Jaguar feel all the more authentic and characterful.

Otherwise, the interior shows absolutely minimal signs of use, with clean carpeting, clean headlining, door cards, and a sleek wooden dashboard, adorned with the classic Smiths instruments. 

All instruments and controls within the vehicle are believed to be in full working order, and show minimal wear to contact points. 

Inside the boot, you’ll find the spare wheel, original jack, tools for adjusting the wheel spinners, along with the tool belt. 

The Exterior

Whilst it is of course subject to personal taste, nothing can deny the elegance of the FHC XK120’s body lines. 

The fixed roof gives the Jaguar a very sleek, retro style that simply can’t be matched by any of its rivals. Benefitting from a thorough restoration and fresh respray, this example of course does Jaguar proudly. 

Other than a couple of incredibly minor defects as pictured, the fresh red paintwork looks absolutely superb, and can hardly be faulted for how it presents itself today. 

Although this Jaguar is in full working order and will gladly power along, the exterior of this example warrants the prime spot at a classic car show or private collection. 

Accompanying the striking red paintwork are plenty of re-chromed components and tidy trim pieces, all of which are in excellent condition and certainly don’t detract from the red paintwork. 

Glasswork around the car also looks excellent, with the exception of the front windscreen which shows an ever so slight mark as pictured. 

The car sits on its set of classy wire-spoke wheels, which are wrapped in a set of classic Pirelli Cinturato Tyres. Although perhaps a bit of a nightmare to clean, the spoked wheels and shiny centre spinners are in excellent condition and suit the classy body lines of the XK120 perfectly. 

Overall, it is very difficult to fault this wonderful Jaguar in terms of how it presents itself.

The car would make a stunning addition to a collection, and will no doubt continue to capture the hearts of onlookers wherever it may venture.

Buyers will be pleased to know that this Jaguar XK120 fires up right away, and happily idles away until you’re ready to unleash the straight-six. 

Upon pressing the accelerator, you’re welcomed by a sublime exhaust note and plenty of power throughout the gears. Although perhaps not as mind-blowing by today’s standards, it's no wonder these coupes were so popular in motorsport. 

As the included paperwork will show, this car has been well maintained over the years, benefitting from the likes of an engine rebuild, a new water pump, the expected consumables, and plenty more new components as part of the restoration process.
