Car was offered at auction 8/05
www.practicalclassics.co.uk/auctionlot/by-id/1300340153/

Auction description:
Lot 1059A: 1953 Jaguar XK120SE Drophead Coupé
Quail Lodge Motor Cars, Bonhams & Butterfields (19th August 2005)

Overview
This matching-numbers XK120SE has the drophead coupé coachwork and thus is the most rare of all XK sports car variants. According to build records, 'S-677050' is the 50th left-hand drive car built with a build date of 4-17-1953. It was "dispatched" on 5-5-1953 to Charles Hornburg USA, but it was first registered in CA early in 1954. The vendor believes that this car has had just two owners from new. However, little is known about the first owner. The car was purchased by the current owner in Monterey, CA in 1982 and has benefited from restoration by three different shops, starting in the early 1990s. Harris Restoration in Reno, Nevada worked on the car before it was sent to XK Unlimited where work was undertaken on the engine, chassis, and running gear. Then, circa 1995, Mike Wilson completed its restoration and detailing. As a result the car now has a 99+ point rating from the JCNA and has been shown in recent years at the Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance. In total, only 1,471 left-hand drive 120DHCs were built, of which just a fraction were offered with the 'Special Equipment' configuration.

Finished in 'Birch Grey' with black top and boot, the car features chromed wire wheels and a dual exhaust system. Also included are a tool kit, manuals, spare wheel and four original (painted) wire wheels matching this original body color. The vehicle is sold with Bill of Sale, Heritage Certificate and JCNA score sheets.

Not sold 8/19/2005 at Bonhams at $72k

Chrome wires. SE model

Excellent paint and door fit; hood is wide at the sides. Very good chrome, with some sanding marks visible under the bumper plating. Some cracked window rubbers. Very good interior, well fitted, excellent wood trim.
Market Opinion: This Jag was well presented in a lovely, unusual color. The bid was certainly at least $10k light.

Sellers description:
1953 JAGUAR XK120 DROP HEAD COUPE, 1953 Jaguar XK 120 SE DHCChassis No. S677050, Engine No. S677050Birch Grey with Tan InteriorOne of the 1950s most iconic motor cars, the Jaguar XK series have always a strong following. With a growing numbers of shows, clubs, and events catering to these cars, they continue to be in demand. This is a particularly outstanding, matching numbers example, sold new with the special equipment package, and having just finished a complete restoration in 2005. Since the restoration was completed, the car has achieved 99.0, and 99.8 points respectively at the two JCNA and SCCA shows it has been entered in.Believed to have been sold new through Jaguar of Monterey, California, the present owner bought it there as a used vehicle 23 years ago. In 2005 a full cosmetic and mechanical restoration was completed. XKs Unlimited completed the motor and gearbox rebuilds, and assembled the chassis and body components. Mike Wilson restorations picked things up from here, trimming the interior, completing the body and paint work, and fully detailing the car to show standards. Currently the odometer shows 38,923 miles, and the car has completed 500 miles since the restoration was finished. With the exception of one small tear in the headliner fabric, the interior is like new having just been restored. The leather, dash wood, carpet, interior chrome, and door jams are all impeccable- showing no signs of use.The car has seen an extremely high quality repaint in its original color and has no chips or scratches of any significance. A new canvas top has been fitted, along with new gasketing at all seams. Body fit and door shut are excellent. The exterior chrome and window glass are near perfect. The trunk has been fully restored with new carpeting and upholstery, restored jack and spare wheel. The engine compartment is extremely nicely detailed, with polished aluminum valve covers and float bowls. The wiring harness has been restored to factory standards, and the window washer bottle is present, and in excellent condition. With the car comes the original manual, tools and tool roll, jack and ratchet, Heritage Certificate #8401- confirming this as a matching numbers car, original XK120 sales brochure, records from the restoration, and several sets of extra keys.
