* Selected by Jaguar Cars of North America for the XK50 Celebration

* Two-Time 100 Point Car in JCNA Competition

Delivered new to Hoffman’s showroom in Manhattan on August 18, 1954, this rare M-specification XK Roadster was sold shortly after to Anthony Caruso of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Mr. Caruso, President of the Eastern Electric Vending Machine Corporation, enjoyed the car for many years, eventually bringing it with him to Arizona when he relocated.

In December 1980, the XK120 was sold to marque expert Terry Larson in complete, unrestored condition. Over the next two years, the Jaguar was restored in Mr. Larson’s shop and, in February 1982, it was sold to The Great American Motorcar Gallery in Denver. The exquisite Jaguar remained in their care until September 1987 when the current owner acquired it. After using the car for several years, a comprehensive restoration was undertaken with the aim of creating a competitive show car that could also be driven enthusiastically.

The engine was entrusted to Scott Sutton, a noted Northern California Jaguar restorer and race preparer. In his care, the engine was completely disassembled and blueprinted before the rebuilding process was carried further. The $25,000 build was done to the highest standards and incorporated high-performance camshafts, oversized intake valves, 13.1:1 forged aluminum pistons, a ported and polished head, custom harmonic dampener, high-flow oil pump, new main bearings and ultra-rare sand-cast SU carburetors. Beyond the high-performance upgrades, the rear differential and driveshaft were rebuilt and a rare period-correct close ratio gearbox was sourced and installed.

Once the mechanical process was complete, the Jaguar was sent to Mike Wilson’s Restorations in Visalia, California for a complete nut-and-bolt restoration in anticipation of the JCNA competition. Every aspect of the car was attended to and accessories were sourced or repaired to restore the Jaguar to show condition. At the time, the owner made the decision to finish the timeless sports car in red over tan, a classic combination that suits its sporting character. Mr. Wilson states that this car runs as well as any XK120 he has driven and reports that its subtly upgraded engine has an edge to it that significantly transforms the performance of the car.

The concours pedigree of this XK120 is most impressive and includes a series of five JCNA concours, after which it tied for 1st place in the Southwest Region and placed 4th nationally in 1994 with a 99.87 average score. Subsequent showings include Hillsborough and Silverado in California, as well as the Vintage Grand Prix in Reno. Amazingly, the Jaguar was displayed at the Day on the Village Green in 1995 and 1998, winning Best of Show on both occasions. In its most recent showing, the XK120 appeared at the Fresno JCNA concours in 2005, capturing 1st place, Best of Show and a perfect 100-point judgment!

In 1998, this was one of only 50 examples selected by Jaguar Cars of North America to represent the XK series during the 50th anniversary celebration of the iconic sports car, during which it received a handsome trophy from Jaguar. A further honor came when the Roadster was selected by the National Auto Museum to be the sole XK120 at the popular Heart of the Jag exhibit.

A sensational example in every way, this XK120 M Roadster is ready for its new owner to enjoy, whether on the open road or on the concours lawn.
