This car came to us for a host of repairs in early 2012 after the owner purchased the car from the USA on ebay. The car was advertised as S671908, W4280-8, JL9436, F3842 and is fitted with XK140 C Type cylinder head G2201-8S. Those numbers appear on the ID plate but there was no chassis number to be found when attempting to road register the car in Queensland. The body number tag is missing. The car required a total mechanical rebuild and has rust in the front of the chassis so we have removed the body and totally stripped down the chassis and had is sandblasted. The original chassis number was then revealed in the 2 places where they are stamped and it clearly shows S674744. The engine fitted to the car (W4280-8) is from S671098 so we assume what has been done is they have bogged over the S674744 and stamped up a new plate to make the engine match the chassis number. It is fitted with gearbox JL22683. A bit of a saga but all worked out now. So the car listed on XKDATA as S671908 is this car. The seller was kidding himself when he states that the car has had "a complete and correct frame off restoration and all components were rebuilt, restored or replaced." Buyer beware I guess! I would like to stamp up a correct new ID plate for the car but the heritage certificate does not list the engine, gearbox or body numbers. Gavin King www.concours.com.au
