This 1956 Jaguar XK140 is a left-hand-drive Drophead Coupe that was completed on August 24, 1956. It was acquired in 1978 by the current owner, who subsequently began a multi-decade body-off refurbishment that was brought to completion in 2009 by XKs Unlimited of San Luis Obispo, California. Work included a repaint in Jaguar Platinum Metallic, a reupholstered red leather interior, and a rebuild of the replacement 3.5-liter inline-six. Additional features include a five-speed manual transmission, a dark blue soft top, a Sony CD stereo, Mallory ignition, dual SU carburetors, and chrome 16” Dayton knock-off wire wheels. Maintenance in March 2021 consisted of an oil change, a front end alignment, a carburetor cleaning, adjustments of the clutch and brakes, and a replacement thermostat and rear shocks. This XK140 DHC is being offered by the seller on behalf of the owner with documentation beginning in 1978 and a clean California title in the owner’s name.
The Drophead Coupe features an integrated windshield frame, roll-up side windows, and exterior door handles. This example was finished from the factory in black with a Sand soft top and received a bare-metal repaint in its current shade of Jaguar Platinum Metallic during the body-off refurbishment. The brightwork has been re-plated. Additional features include a dark blue soft top with a plastic rear window, Lucas front driving lamps, and dual fender-mounted side mirrors. A rock chip is pointed out.
Replacement chrome 16” Dayton wire wheels are secured with two-eared knock-off spinners and wrapped in 185-width Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. Braking is through red-painted drums at all four corners. Recent maintenance has included a front end alignment, a brake adjustment, and the installation of new GAZ rear shocks. A full-size spare is found in the trunk.
The cabin has been reupholstered in red leather with matching door panels and carpets. Lap belts are fitted for the front occupants. Amenities include a dash-mounted rear-view mirror, a locking glovebox, and a Sony CD stereo. A piece of wood veneer made to cover the radio opening when the unit has been removed is included in the sale. The seller notes that the heater has been disconnected.
A wood-rimmed Nardi three-spoke steering wheel features a Jaguar center cap and sits ahead of a custom wood dash panel with a burlwood veneer housing Smiths instrumentation that includes a reverse-sweep 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset clock, a 140-mph speedometer, and auxiliary gauges for amperage, fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows just over 8k miles, and approximately 14k miles are said to have been added during current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The replacement DOHC 3.5-liter inline-six features dual SU carburetors, and was sourced from another Jaguar. It was rebuilt and blueprinted by XKs Unlimited in 2008. Equipment includes Mallory ignition, an aluminum radiator with an electric fan, a high-torque starter, and an alternator. Work in March 2021 included an oil change, a carburetor cleaning and tune, and a replacement thermostat.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a replacement Tremec T-5 five-speed manual transmission. Harco mufflers have been installed.
The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate displays the production and dispatch dates, along with the factory colors and identification numbers. Note that the certificate is not included in the sale.
