Private Party Or Dealer: Dealer

This 1956 Jaguar XK140 is a left-hand-drive drophead coupe that was manufactured on January 16, 1956, and distributed by Jaguar Cars of New York. The car was refurbished under previous ownership and was acquired by the selling dealer in August 2019. It has been refinished in white with a red top over red leather upholstery, and power comes from a numbers-matching 3.4L inline-six paired with a three-speed automatic gearbox. Features include 16″ steel wheels, removable fender skirts, chrome bumpers, fender-mounted side mirrors, a wooden dashboard, and a heater. This XK140 DHC is now offered in Canada with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate and a clean Quebec registration.

Delivered new in Carmen Red with a blue soft top, the car was refinished in its current shade of white and fitted with a red soft top during a refurbishment under previous ownership. Brightwork includes the window trim, grille, fender-mounted side mirrors, chrome bumpers with overriders, and a chrome center spear. Cracking can be seen on the lower body beneath the grille.

Body-color 16″ steel wheels wear polished hubcaps and are mounted with 6.00-16″ Firestone bias ply whitewall tires. A spare wheel and tire are housed under the trunk floor, and braking is provided by drums at all four corners. Service said to have been completed in 2021 included replacement of the brake master cylinder and front wheel cylinders.

The cabin features front and rear seats that have been reupholstered in red leather with matching door panels and red carpeting. Equipment includes a walnut dashboard and door caps, a heater, a lockable glovebox, lap belts, and a dash-mounted rear view mirror.

The four-spoke steering wheel fronts centrally-mounted Smiths instrumentation including a reverse-sweep tachometer with an inset clock as well as a 140-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 25k miles, approximately 500 of which were added by the selling dealer. Total mileage is unknown.

The 3.4-liter inline-six features dual overhead camshafts and twin SU carburetors, and it was factory rated at 190 horsepower. Service in 2021 is said to have included a replacement of the spark plugs and an oil change.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Borg-Warner three-speed automatic gearbox. Additional photos of the underside are presented in the gallery.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate indicates that the vehicle was built on January 16, 1956, and was originally distributed by Jaguar Cars of New York. The serial numbers on the engine and body tag match the numbers noted on the certificate and the chassis plate. The Quebec registration lists the vehicle as a 1957 model.

There has been no known bodywork damage.

Its resprayed paintwork is in generally very good shape, with a few blemishes around the chrome grille. The rest of the finish is well documented in the gallery, and the car evidently presents in very smart driver condition.

Inside the re-trimmed red leather seats are in great shape, showing few signs of use. Some small scratches and scuffs can be seen on the burr wood dashboard inlays, but overall the cabin remains very elegant.

All of the electrics are in good working order, and there are no known mechanical faults.

SERVICE HISTORY

The car has covered only around 25 miles since its most recent service in November 2021, where technicians replaced the engine oil and spark plugs.

SUMMARY

This Jaguar XK140 DHC is a beautifully restored example of the elegant classic sports car, with resprayed paintwork and a re-trimmed interior. It is a very smart driver that presents superbly, and would be a credit to any collection; ready to relish on the open road to make the most of warm summer days.

*Expertly restored by marque specialist

*Authenticated with matching numbers per a verified heritage certificate

*Striking white exterior complemented by a vibrant red interior with red soft top

*Originally delivered to New York for its first ownership

This 1956 Jaguar XK140 is a true gem of classic motoring. Delivered new to a dealership in New York, it has since undergone a complete restoration, ensuring that it presents in top condition. The restoration process involved stripping down the paint and refurbishing the matching numbers engine and drivetrain.

Externally, the car boasts a tasteful white finish that is complemented by a red canvas top. The 16-inch steel wheels, finished in the same shade as the bodywork, are standard equipment and provide a stylish contrast to the car's red leather interior. The red leather upholstery extends to the front and rear seats, door panels, and carpeting, creating a harmonious and elegant cabin. The walnut dashboard and door caps are a testament to the car's luxury and attention to detail, while a lockable glovebox and lap belts provide additional practicality. A dash-mounted rearview mirror further enhances the driver's visibility.

The XK140 was offered with several optional extras, including fog lights, a heater, and rear removable wheel arches, or "fender skirts." These fender skirts protected the wheels and tires from debris while improving the car's aerodynamics. The adjustable steering wheel, also an option, allowed the driver to set the steering wheel to a comfortable angle, particularly useful for drivers of different heights.

Under the hood, the XK140 is powered by a matching numbers engine that provides plenty of power and performance. The engine and body numbers match the numbers noted on the certificate and chassis plate, further attesting to the car's authenticity.

The 1956 Jaguar XK140 is a classic that offers a unique combination of style and performance. Its sleek design, powerful engine, and comfortable interior make it an excellent choice for anyone looking to experience the glory days of 1950s motoring. With numerous options available, such as fog lights, adjustable steering wheel, and overdrive, the XK140 offers a personalized driving experience that is tailored to individual preferences. Whether you're looking for a car that will turn heads or provide a thrilling driving experience, this Jaguar XK140 is a top choice.
