HISTORY OF THE XK 140

Introduced in October 1954 the XK 140 saw major improvements over the XK 120. Produced until 1959 the XK 140 offered a more practical design. Additionally wire wheels and more power (which was mainly requested from America) became standard. The 140 generally was more refined and comfortable than its predecessor.
In all, less than 9,000 XK 140?s were produced between 1954 and 1959. The rarest and arguably the rarest and most beautiful was the Fixed Head Coupe. The designers who inspired Jaguar?s Sir William Lyons were Saoutchik and Figoni & Falaschi with their pre-war Talbot and Delehayes. In the October `05 issue of Automobile Magazine, Editor David E. Davis called the Jaguar XK one of the 10 world?s greatest sports cars. Davis argues that Lyon?s other inspiration for the car was the aerodynamic pre-war BMW built for the 1940 Mille Miglia.

The 1955 Jaguar XK 140 Fixed Head Coupe offered here finished in a lustrous red with a tan leather interior was treated to a professional body-off restoration by XK and E-Type specialist Martin Mozely of New Braunfels, Texas. The paint and the body were restored by Ben Calvert of Pro Restorations works in San Antonio, Texas. The engine, transmission, and all mechanicals were completely rebuilt by acclaimed XK series Jaguar restoration expert Fred Balcar of Fallbrook, California.

The three year show quality restoration was completed in 1997 and the car has only been driven approximately 6,000 miles since. It has appeared at numerous shows earning several awards, and was featured on the cover of Union Jack magazine. When not on the show field, it has been stored in a climate controlled environment to preserve its outstanding condition. A truly elegant automobile, and a strong performer, the XK 140 FHC is cherished equally for its engineering and style and this fine example offers both without compromise.
