Ebay item 11/11/20

www.ebay.com/itm/1955-Jaguar-XK/114511077371

Opening bid $65,000, no reserve, no bids 9 days left in auction, seller jerbic_de, 52k miles, now said to be in Cupertino, California, previously San Jose, CA

Seller's description:

So much has been written about this car that I can only add one thought Very few cars are as perfectly at home on the track and on the red carpet as this one.  With the leather seats, wood dash and trim rails, and wool headliner and carpets, this car is a perfectly fit for a unique rarely seen formal driving experience. And yet, an XK140 coupe raced at Lemans in 1956.  With the first dual overhead cam production engine and 210 HP, this car is at home on the track. The 140 is at home on the freeway as well.  I’ve driven this car up to 100 mph.

The intent was to keep the car as close to original as possible. This car gives you the experience of driving an XK140 right off of the showroom floor in 1955.

This is one of the rarer XKs. Of the 2807 made between 1954 and 1957xkdata. com shows 1127 survivors and 561 left hand drive survivors.

This car was originally sold in May of 1955. It has the MC package, consisting of the “C” cylinder head, fog lights, wire wheels, overdrive, and dual exhaust. The car was originally sold in Los Angeles California by the Hornburg dealership. The original color was Lavender Grey (think pastel green) with red interior. The car had been repainted silver before I purchased the car I the 1980s. Before I acquired the car, the “C” head had been replaced with a different but correct “C” head. All numbers numbers match with the exception of the head.

The odometer reads 52200. The odometer reading was almost the same in the 1980s.

History:

I purchased from a private seller in San Francisco as a blue-plate California Car. Restoration was performed through the 1980s and 1990s by Fred Balcor, a collector and restorer in San Diego. He managed the body, and interior restoration. The car has been in covered garage storage in California since the 1990s.

The intent of the restoration was to keep the car as original as possible.   Slight modifications are for safety (seat belts) or reliability (Pertronix ignition).

Body

The paint is a Mercedes silver from 1990s  Body work was done professionally in San Diego. Wood frame for the trunk was replaced. Correct etchings in the windows and dealer sticker. Original rear window. The Wiring harness replaced. The new harness used vinyl insulation, period cloth wrapping and bullet ends.

Chassis and Frame:

Body was painted off the frame. The frame was powder coated.  Shocks were leaking and replaced with modern shocks. Hubs were replaced. Dayton wire wheels were installed at the same time so minimal wear on wheel or spline hubs. Brake pads replaced. Brake cylinders brass sleeve from white post restoration.  Vredelstein radial tires with plenty of tread are fitted.

 Engine:

Compression Check 7/28/20 Cylinder 6 (front) 150, 5-155, 4-160, 3-160, 2-155, 1-155

Radiator (original and correct for early XK140) boiled and repainted. Car runs with 50% antifreeze, 50% water and wetting agent. No overheating issues. Engine was rebuilt with cylinder sleeves to original bore. Non-Matching “C” head came with the car. The Carburetor throttle bodies have been bored and sleeved so the carbs do not leak at the throttle rods. to prevent leaks. Gross Jets were used to prevent float leaks.

Transmission: Transmission was rebuilt in 1980s with best available used synchro gears. The car shifts extremely smoothly. Overdrive works as it should.

Interior:

Connolly leather and Wilton wool headliner, and Wilton Wool carpets from Bassets interiors. Correct paint on frame rails. Period seat belts. All instruments are correct and refurbished. The clock is original and disconnected.  Wood was professionally restored by a Jaguar professional. Door frame wood rails are the correct walnut on mahogany. Wood is lacquered and shows outstandingly well.

Components:

Notable original components: Full tool kit, FHC only washer bottle, steering wheel, OD switch with correct bezel and light. Correct horns. Correct etched water marks on the glass. Original visors. Otter switch for the carburetors.

The car is registered in California with the correct California YOM 1955 license plates and 1955 tag. Lucas mirrors on the fenders. “J” headlights. Correct XK rear window handles (not the webbed version from the sedan).

Notable Upgrades: Seat belts, Pertronix ignition, 12V battery (Cable and boxes are present). The original hinge boxes were replaced with massive stainless-steel hinge boxes and self-lubricating bushings. No sag or play in the doors. Brass sleeved throttle rod bushings (no air leaks in the carbs) and Gross jets in the carb floats (no fuel leaks in the carbs). The wheel cylinders are brass sleeved. sleeved Exhaust is new. The wiring harness has the correct braided fabric loom with plastic insulation, so no wiring fire concerns.

Notable missing or non-original parts:   French yellow fog light bulbs have replaced the US fog lights. The chrome is missing on rear window. I have various and sundry period radios not installed in the car.

Comes with complete toolset, grease gun, jack and T-handle.

I have several of the chrome wire wheels that came with the car. I believe they are original. They would need to be restored to be put in service again. I have various and sundry spares that take up a few cabinets in my garage. The spares may be of interest but I would consider these parts an upside to the sale.

Documentation:

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
