This 1953 Jaguar XK120 fixed head coupe is a left-hand drive SE model that was manufactured in December 1952. The current owner purchased the car about three years ago from the second owner, a retired naval officer who acquired it in 1974. A body-off restoration was recently completed, including a rebuild of the numbers-matching 3.4-liter twin-cam straight-six. The 4-speed gearbox was also rebuilt, and a bare metal repaint in British Racing Green was performed along with an extensive interior refresh that included fitting new beige leather and refinishing the wood. Many new exterior trim pieces and mechanical components were added as described below, and the electrical system was also completely gone through. The original wire wheels were powder coated, and the car has been driven approximately 250 shakedown miles since all of the work was completed. It is now being offered on behalf of the current owner by a friend with receipts and photos of the restoration, a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, the original knock-off hammer and jack, literature, a laminated wiring diagram, an under-hood grease gun, spare parts, and a clean South Carolina title.
Originally Dove Gray, the body was stripped to bare metal and repainted in British Racing Green during the restoration. The finish was then wet sanded, buffed, and polished. The seller notes that the only areas of rust were two small sections on the interior where the door pillar met the floor pan. These were cut out and new sheet metal was welded in. New chrome bumpers were installed front/rear, though the grille is believed to be the original item.
The 16″ knock-off wire wheels were powder coated black and feature splined hubs. New 215/70 Dunlop tires were installed all around, as were new drum brakes, lines, and a master cylinder. New shock absorbers were fitted at all four corners along with new door, trunk, and window seals.
Interior work included replacing the Suede Green interior with beige leather and refinishing the burled walnut wood on the dashboard and doors. All new carpet, sound deadener, and new premium hardwood plywood floors with custom floor mats are fitted. The seller notes the original windshield is in place and new seals were fitted.
The Smith instruments include a re-calibrated 140 mph speedometer, a reverse-sweeping tachometer, and a combination water/oil temperature gauge. The fuel gauge was rebuilt and calibrated, and a new sending unit was installed. The seller reports that the gauges, switchgear, and electrics function as they should with exception of the clock. The odometer shows 53,363 miles.
The 3,442cc twin-cam six features twin polished SU carburetors and sends power to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual gearbox with synchromesh on the top three gears. Per the seller, the factory rope seals were upgraded to stainless and Teflon when possible, and the voltage regulator has been rebuilt. A 12-volt battery replaces the stock twin 6-volt unit and includes a cut-off switch. A new braided cloth-wrapped complete wiring harness was installed and closely resembles the original Lucas wiring.
Stamping #W6939-8S can be seen above and matches the Heritage Trust certificate, confirming the engine as original.
The exhaust system includes black ceramic coated manifolds and new dual stainless steel ceramic coated exhaust piping that was routed to flow through the factory cross-member in order to increase ground clearance. The gas tank was replaced, and new copper lines were installed along with a new electric fuel pump and filter. A few minor oil leaks are noted by the seller, who states that they are typical of Jaguars from this era.
A tool set resides in the boot along with a knock-off hammer, jack, boot light, as well as a newly covered panel and mat. The spare wheel has been powder coated black to match and includes a custom plywood knock-off leverage tool.
Following the shakedown miles, the carburetors, torsion bars, suspension, and brake shoes were adjusted in order to optimize performance and street-ability according to the seller.
The included Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate shows the build date and original color scheme. Chassis number 680505, body number J2511, and engine number W6939-8S are recorded.
