Chassis Number: 675074

1954 Jaguar XK120 Roadster

ESTIMATE 110.000 - 120.000 EUR

Presented here is a gorgeous 1954 Jaguar XK120 Roadster that has recently benefitted from a complete mechanical and cosmetic restoration.

Finished in black over a suede green leather interior, the Jaguar has been restored to a period competition racing look.

Visual features include a rear side-exiting exhaust, leather bucket seats, off-white racing number decals and Brookland’s windscreens.

Extra special care was given to the mechanical aspect of the restoration.

The engine was rebuilt by a master XK-engine specialist and is a true gem.

We have rarely if ever, come across a more balanced, refined, and free-revving XK engine.

To improve drivability, the car is upgraded with a neatly integrated all-synchro Jaguar 4 speed manual gearbox with overdrive, mated to a short rear diff ratio.

This ensures worry-free gear changes, brisk acceleration, while the overdrive makes it also comfortable to drive at higher speeds for an increased timespan.

INTERIOR

The green leather interior has been completely renewed and contrasts wonderfully with the black paintwork.

Aluminium framed bucket seats complete the racing look of the XK’s interior.

They are very comfortable and offer great support.

A definitive improvement over the standard factory seating arrangement.

The door panels are trimmed in the same leather used on the seats and are flawless.

New carpets are fitted. The leather used is surface dyed like the original specification leather, which implies that they will develop a lovely patina after use.

New furflex weatherstripping is fitted in the correct matching shade of green.

Underneath the new carpets, we find a new wooden floorboard painted black to factory specification.

The area behind the rear seats is not trimmed.

A single 12V battery replaces the original twin 6V battery layout.

There is no soft-top frame present, but we can source this at buyer’s request.

The instruments and switchgear are all of the correct specification and in perfect working order.

The tachometer has been reset during the restoration and reads 00040 Miles.

ENGINE & GEARBOX

The engine of this car has been rebuilt to a standard we have rarely seen.

It was built by a master engine rebuilder who specialised in the Jaguar XK engine.

This engine incorporates all his knowledge, precision, and know-how accumulated over the years, and is the crowning glory of XK120 engines.

Modifications include larger exhaust valves (to SE specification), stage 1 camshafts that enhance engine character throughout the entire rev range, ported cylinder head ports, modern BMW piston rings and a custom exhaust.

Every combustion chamber was measured and matched to be within 0,5cc of each other.

The pistons and conrods were all carefully weight-matched.

The engine breathes through the correct inlet manifold and twin H6 carburettors, that have been tuned with slightly richer needles, resulting in a silky smooth and powerful running of the engine.

We cannot emphasize highly enough just how exceptional and balanced this engine unit feels. The vitreous enamel porcelain on the exhaust manifolds is still holding up nicely.

The engine starts on the button and the Thermo choke works perfectly, not over fueling on startup and switching off in time when the engine starts to get up to normal operating temperature.

The original non-overdrive, non-synchro Moss gearbox has been replaced by an all-synchro Jaguar 4 speed gearbox with overdrive.

The gearbox works flawlessly, and you can shift it with confidence as fast as your hand can move the gear lever, which is never the case with a Moss gearbox.

The overdrive is engaged by a flick of a neatly integrated switch located on the left of the dashboard. Both engagement and disengagement of the overdrive happen smoothly.

The tailor-made exhaust on the car makes the engine sound very much like a factory C- or D-type.

BODY & EXTERIOR

The paintwork is of excellent quality and is showing no orange peel texture.

Bonnet shut lines are acceptable, but not millimetre perfect.

The aluminium cowls for the Brooklands screens are hand beaten and are a much prettier shape than the higher profiled items commercially available.

There is no full-size windscreen present, but we can source this at buyer’s request.

The chrome grille has not been replated and is in very nice original condition.

The rear number plate light, boot lid handle, all the other bright ware on the car is in perfect shape.

The rear bumperette mounts pass through new and supple seals.

The boot lid is missing a rubber seal and takes a little fettling to close the handle properly.

The XK is equipped with beautiful European specification LUCAS PF770 headlamps, and a LUCAS CLR 700S spotlight in excellent condition.

Correct specification black wire wheels, shod with new 6.00 X 16 tires.

There are tiny markings in the paint above the driver’s side rear wheel, and next to the convertible top hooks.

The door hinges have no play in them, and the doors shut nicely with minimal effort.

The sides of the XK are very straight on both sides all along the car.

The door gaps are good but not perfect, the doors stick out about 2mm at the back, but this is hardly noticeable and certainly doesn’t distract from the car’s overall appearance.

When looked upon closely, it can be seen that the front wings have once been drilled to accept side mirrors. This is highlighted in the picture above and is less noticeable in the flesh.

NUMBERS

The original data plate is present. It shows chassis number 675074, Body number F7350 and engine number F2138-8

The chassis number stamped in front of the radiator, and on the chassis matches the data plate.

The body tag also matches the data plate.

The engine block number matches the data plate, the cylinder head is unstamped, but a correct casting.

The radiator is the original Marston Excelsior part, with serial number 4606.

PAPER TRAIL

The XK comes with a heritage certificate, that confirms the data plate numbers.

It teaches us that the car was produced on the 24th of February 1954 and dispatched to sunny California on the 11th of March 1954.

Factory colours were Battleship grey over a red interior.

The XK comes with an American title, and proof of paid EU import duties.

If preferred by a European buyer, the seller agrees to register the car in The Netherlands free of charge to the buyer before the end of June 2021.

UNDERCARRIAGE & MECHANICAL

The chassis on this car has been completely restored both cosmetically and technically.

All suspension bushes, shock absorbers, ball joints and brakes have either been replaced or overhauled.

The fuel tank is a new worry-free aluminium item, that has been painted satin black underneath for original looks.

There are no tools or spare tire present.
