Car returned auction in 2020

Auction description:

Bonhams MPH September Auction, Bicester, UK 20 September, 2020

Lot 48

1952 Jaguar XK120 Roadster

Registration no. XVV 250 Chassis no. 672703

Presented in left-hand drive form this American-market 1952 XK120 was built on 19 August 1952 and sold new through Charles Homburg Jr's dealership on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, before coming 'home' in the late 1990s. It comes to auction having been given a nut-and-bolt restoration three years ago – a process that took 1400 hours of labour, with some work outsourced to specialists but much carried out by the then owner. The car retains its original chassis, engine (head and block matching numbers), and body. With very good - excellent bodywork, Birch Grey metallic paint, glass and trim and the interior offers excellent red leather seats, dashboard and trim, while the hood's headlining is in very good condition, the vendor says. Engine starting, running and presentation is reported to be very good and the running gear and the electrics are also in vendor-assessed very good order. A good history file accompanies this lot. Offered from an important UK based private collection.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
