Ebay item 11/10/11
cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1952-Jaguar-XK120-SE-Roadster-OTS-Exceptional-Project-Ca ...
Opening bid $1,952 reserve not met, no bids yet 6 days left in auction.

Sellers description:
By Kurt Tanner Restorations, is a 1952 Jaguar XK120 SE Roadster. Out of the 7600 total production for 120 Roadsters, only approximately 1150 had the SE , or special equipment designation. This included an uprated engine to 180 bhp, 3/8 inch high lift camshafts, twin exhaust system, lightened flywheel, special front crankshaft dampener, 1 inch thick torsion bars, and center-lock wire wheels. This 1952 car features the early body with separate chrome parking light housings, but late enough to have the foot vent boxes. This car was produced as an SE model with all the upgraded options, but early enough before the factory designated these cars with the letter 'S' as a prefix in the VIN number. It is a full, numbers matching car. It's factory color scheme was originally Creme with Red trim, with Fawn top and sidescreens. The original wire wheels are still painted in the correct body color paint. It is an exceptional car for restoration, and has been disassembled with much work, money, and time already spent. It is a 100% totally complete vehicle, with several items already purchased for it. I purchased this vehicle approximately 2 years ago in this condition, but 6 months previous to that had seen the car fully assembled and totally complete, ready for restoration. I can testify to it's completeness. Please read on for an accurate description.
BODY As shown by the photos, the body and panels on this car are in excellent condition. The body was carefully soda-blasted inside and out, and all minor repairs were made including the typical corrosion in the battery boxes. The metal return edges supporting the wooden floorboards were weak, so they were consequently replaced. The B-post box pillars had some localized repairs, as well as a very small section at the tail end of the body. The biggest job was the full restoration of all 4 door hinges. These needed complete removal and repair, but are now perfect and well-greased. All aluminum panels were painstakingly and carefully stripped by hand, scrubbed and washed to a lovely bare-metal finish, inside and out. The bonnet has been very tastefully and sensibly louvered some time in the fifties or sixties, and is done in an attractive and expert way. The trunk lid is in good condition, but needs the rearmost, lower wood piece replaced. The doors need some welding of minor cracks in the hinge mount areas. All panels line up considerably well, and the main body only has a handful of dents. There is no accident damage. After an easy day's work of fitting up panels and alignment, this car would be certainly ready for the paint shop. All other associated body parts and panels have been blasted as well.
MECHANICALS Totally complete. The engine and gearbox have been left completely together and intact, still with the original coil, carbs, generator, starter, intake and exhaust manifolds, air cleaners, breather pipe, distributor, oil filter, etc. The engine is currently stuck from sitting, and will need to be freed up and disassembled for rebuild, as well as the gearbox. The steering box was partially dismantled for removal from the car, but looks to be in very good condition. The rear axle has been steam cleaned, turns smoothly, and seems to be in good shape. The rear splined hubs will need replacing. The radiator still has the original core and looks very good.
CHASSIS Considerable time and money has been spent here. The chassis frame along with all associated suspension and undercarraige parts have been powder-coated in black gloss to an excellent standard. There is some minor pitting on the top part of the frame, just above the area where the passenger rocker panel would reside once the body is back on the chassis. The area would not be visible, though. All suspension parts look excellent and are waiting to go back on the frame once chassis parts are purchased. New rear springs need to be purchased. All chassis nuts and bolts have been correctly replated in black cadmium for an original finish. All fuel and brake lines have been retained for replicating. The 4 original brake drums have been machined and only require painting. The brake shoes are in good condition. The original rear shocks have been rebuilt and are still in the box. The front splined hubs are excellent. The car comes with 5 original painted spoke rims plus a set of 4 newer 54-spoke chrome wire wheels fitted with 6.00x16 BFGoodrich Silvertown wide whitewall tires. Overall, the chassis and parts are beautiful and require simple, straightforward reassembly.
INTERIOR TRIM AND CHROME All old interior panels have been removed and saved for reference. A newer OSJI full retrim kit has been purchased for this car in red and is still wrapped up in the protective bags. This includes full wool carpet kit, interior panel kit, leather armrest, sufficient leather to recover cockpit railings, trunk kit, leather seat kit, bulk black canvas for top and tonneau, etc. - everything needed for a complete retrim. The seats have already been correctly retrimmed and look very nice. This car is totally complete with original sidecurtain set, top frame and anchor bar, dashboard, gauges, swithgear, steering wheel, hornpush, heater, wiper motor, etc., etc. These items need restoring but are complete and decent. All the original chrome is present, but definitely needs a replate. The grille is in excellent condition. The bumpers are a little banged up. One of the windshield glass is broken.
MISCELLANEOUS As seen by the photos, lots of items and bracketry has been cleaned up or carefully bead-blasted. Several items have attended to, with alot of additional work expended.
OVERVIEW This Jaguar XK120 SE Roadster for sale here is totally complete. I can think of nothing that is missing from the car. It is a very solid car with good integrity and a very good body. If you are looking to restore a good 120, then this car offers approximately a $10,000-$15,000 headstart(in the trim kit, powder-coating, chrome wheels and tires, soda -blasting,parts,sheet-metal repair, labor, etc.) over other assembled candidates, which may have rust, accident-damage, and most likely need door hinge repair. All sheetmetal and body repairs to this car were professionally carried out and at a large expense, and this car is ready for straightforward body and paint. Considerable time, efforts, and funds have gone into this car, and have been properly spent. The added bonus is that this car is an early, seperate parking light car with the SE specification, which adds value to the finished product. This car is sold with an old Oklahoma title, with history back to Washington state where it was possibly delivered to when new. It is sold with it's original brass ID plate, original body tag, key and key fob, and original Jaguar hood emblem.

Ownership History

The first owner of the Jaguar XK120 OTS, chassis no.672233, was: Homer E Smith (address not recorded), date of purchase May, 1952, price unknown.

The second owner was: C. H. Hale, Seattle, WA. (Date of purchase and purchase price is unknown).

The third owner's name was: Harold Brenholtz, Ada, OK, date of purchase 25 September 1969 (Purchase price is unknown) NOTICE: the Oklahoma Certificate of Title indicated the Model as 'XK120 Re-built'. It is likely that the car was involved in some type of minor front-end collision and was at some-point in a junk yard, which resulted in a 'Re-Built' status on the Oklahoma Title.

The fourth owner's name is unknown. Date of purchase was sometime after 1967 (Place and purchase price is unknown).

The fifth owner's name was: Kurt Tanner, an Austin-Healy car restorer in Claremont, CA, now located in Santa Ana. (Date of purchase and purchase price are unknown). Either Kurt Tanner or the previous owner completely disassembled the car by removing the body, engine and all other parts, including the chassis and suspension. Pictures are available.

The sixth and current owner's name is Robert 'Bob' Sheridan, La Verne, CA. The XK120 was purchased from Austin Healy restorer, Kurt Tanner in December 2011 in totally disassembled condition. Bob Sheridan registered the car not realizing the implication of its Oklahoma 'Re-built Title'. Unfortunately, the California DMV assigned a 'Salvage Title' on the Pink Slip, however, the chassis and body are in perfect, straight condition with no evidence of any prior damage. Why the car was issued a 'Re-built Title' in Oklahoma remains a mystery.

 Restoration Timeline

During the 6-year restoration period between 2012 and 2018, all chrome pieces were sent out for re-chroming to show car quality, hundreds of new and used parts were sourced and purchased as needed, the Jaguar XK120 engine, cylinder head, dual-carburetors and dual brake master cylinder professionally rebuilt. Concurrently, Bob reassembled the chassis components (suspension, brake parts, wheels, brake lines, fuel lines, shocks, steering components, fuel tank, then he and his son Jason reattached the body to the chassis. Bob estimates that he expended at least 20-hours per week (part-time) for a minimum of 20-weeks during the year, equaling 265-hours per year, for a 3-year total of approximately 795-hours of labor. (Conservative estimate)

During restoration, in 2015 the car was hauled up to Ojai, CA for some repairs, bodywork and painting, etc. Total hours expended during the year for metalwork, welding, bodywork, painting, mechanical work, etc. by 3-people totaled approximately 685-hours of labor.

During restoration, in 2016 the car came back from bodywork and painting, etc. and Bob installed a new wiring harness then began reassembling the car. (Labor is included the 795-hours of labor above)

Also, during 2016, Bob was asked by Jack Humphrey, then President of the Jaguar Clubs of North America (JCNA) to research and write a new Jaguar XK120 JCNA Concours d'Elegance Judging Guide. After being vetted and endorsed by the JCNA Concours Rules Committee and Chief Judge Dick Cavicke, Bob prepared a XK120 Judging Guide outline then recruited a team of twelve JCNA XK120 experts, including co-author and well known XK120 expert Roger Payne, located in Sydney, Australia. The purpose of the Jaguar XK120 JCNA Concours d'Elegance Judging Guide is to provide JCNA Judges and XK120 owners with a definitive authenticity and reference guide for describing and picturing XK120 parts as they were supplied by the Jaguar factory. The 175-page Jaguar XK120 JCNA Concours d'Elegance Judging Guide has been subjected to extensive peer review and represents the best information available. The Jaguar XK120 JCNA Concours d'Elegance Judging Guide (2020 Third Printing) features many pictures of Bob's 1952 XK120 OTS, (the same car being offered for sale in this auction) Chassis No. 672233. Bob also co-authored the 322-page Jaguar XK120 Authenticity Reference Guide (All Models) book with Roger Payne, which also features many pictures of Bob's 1952 XK120 OTS, Chassis No. 672233 in the 2020 Third Printing.

Restoration was completed in early 2018. At his first JCNA Concours in Golden, CO, Bob received a score of 99.86 in Champion Class and was awarded 'Best in Show'. The car was hauled in an open trailer over 1,000 miles to the event. On the way, the car was rained and snowed on and received several minor deductions for water spots on the engine, etc. that Bob missed during pre-show detailing. Had it been towed in an enclosed trailer it would have very likely have received a 100.00 point score. Bob attended three JCNA Concours events in 2018 and placed third in the overall JCNA National rankings for XK 120 Champion Class judging, with a final average score of 99.10. This car is perfect for the person who wants to attend JCNA Concours events and go after the National Grand Champion award with a 100.00 point car.

Since its restoration, the car has been fastidiously maintained and cared for. The paint finish and brightwork are excellent, the body is straight, with consistent panel fits and gaps, the rubber and glass are all new. Although the original Dunlop RS5 16-inch bias-ply black wall 'show' tires have plenty of remaining tread, they are not roadworthy. The interior is impeccable. The leather seats are virtually flawless, as are the Wilton wool carpets and interior panels. The dash and instrument panel are beautiful and all the gauges, electrical components, switches, knobs, lights and horn are functional. The car's undercarriage is entirely rust-free, solid and correct. NOTICE: The car was meticulously restored using the Jaguar XK120 JCNA Judging Guide pictures and judging guidelines for correctness. It is, in the XK120 Judging Guide author's opinion, a 100% correct example of a 1952 Jaguar XK120 OTS as delivered from the Jaguar factory.

The original numbers matching engine starts up immediately upon pushing the ignition button, idles correctly and pulls strongly and smoothly through each of the transmission gears. The car drives and brakes straight and the suspension is tight. The new speedometer shows less than 50 miles on the car since its restoration. It has been driven for very short distances, mainly to keep the brake rubber from going bad and to exercise the engine and mechanicals. Since restoration, the car has not been driven on any highway or freeway.

NOTE 3: The owner hopes that the car will go into a private collection or car museum. At 68 years old the car still looks as good as the day it left the factory. The car is too pristine to drive on the road except for special occasions.

NOTE 4: One picture shows a heel pad missing correct horizontal stitching. The photo was taken at the upholstery shop. The upholsterer later added the missing stitch, which can be seen in the photo showing the Smith's Cigar Lighter tag. The incorrect heel pad photo shows a view of the Radio.

This elegant and classic Jaguar XK120 was completed at the legendary Coventry-based Browns Lane Jaguar factory on May 20th, 1952. Equipped for the booming US sportscar market, the new Jaguar was delivered to the Hornburg dealership in Los Angeles as a left-hand drive car. The current owner of this Jaguar purchased the car around the end of 2011. Shortly thereafter, the car was treated to an elaborate 6-year long body off restoration which was performed by the author of both the JCNA Concours d'Elegance Judging Guide as well as the 322-page Jaguar XK120 Authenticity Reference Guide. The cars restoration is documented with photos from the start to finish as well as a complete list of receipts. Then in late 2020, further work was done to ensure the car is roadworthy and ready for its next owner, including complete transmission rebuild, brake work, fluids, as well as adjusting suspension, carburetors, timing, fixing any leaks, greasing all fittings and much more. A complete list of the recent work is available in the history file.

This XK120 Roadster presents beautifully throughout and is finished in the elegant original factory delivered color of Cream, while trimmed in a Dark Red leather interior with Fawn colored canvas top, tonneau cover and side curtains. Retaining its original, matching-numbers engine and transmission, this impressive XK120 Roadster comes fully serviced and ready for immediate concours or touring use. It is eligible for some of the world's foremost vintage rallies and remains one of the most collectible British cars built do date. The car wears original 16-inch Dunlop RS5 road speed bias tires (for Concours use only) and comes complete with tools, jack, Jaguar Heritage Certificate as well as photos and receipts of the restoration. This XK120 was restored to the highest level of authenticity from everything including an original factory Emitron-Jaguar radio down to the Dunlop decals on the tires. A testament of the level of work put into this car was the recent Best in Show award with a score of 99.86 at the 2019 Jaguar Club of North America Concours in Golden, CO and 2020 JCNA XK10 Champion Class National second place winner. Surely a wonderful opportunity to own an XK120 as complete as this.

Car returns to ebay 4/19/21

www.ebay.com/itm/1952-Jaguar-XK/294131909294

Car has a buy it now price of $105,000 for 1 day, same seller jag_lover and location as 3/20/20 listing.

Additional description:

ADDITIONAL WORK DONE AFTER 2018 RESTORATION

$2,209.96 was spent at Vintage Jag Works in Blackfoot, Idaho in November 2020 rebuilding the original 4-speed Moss Box transmission.

$15,127.76 was spent at Steve’s Jaguar in Reseda, CA in late 2020 and early 2021 for performing a list of upgrades, repairs and services to ensure that the car will be roadworthy for the next owner and for installing the rebuilt 4-speed transmission.

Copies of the invoices totaling $17337.72 showing all of the work done are included with the car.

Original receipts are not included with the car. The seller needs them for the IRS to support his Basis for calculating Capital Gains.

NOTE: also included with the car is a 14-page "copy" of parts purchased and repairs made, totaling $96,000. (The total does not include what the seller originally paid for the car prior to restoration or outside restoration labor costs).

APPRAISED VALUES

This car was appraised by Auto Appraisal Network on 3/3/2020. The Auto Appraisal Network restoration replacement value for this vehicle as of the date specified was: $280,500.00.

This car was appraised by Auto Appraisal Network on 6/22/2020. The Auto Appraisal Network fair market value for this vehicle as of the date specified was: $128,000.00.

DISCLOSURES

The painted wire wheels and RS5 Dunlop biased-ply tires shown on the car, are for SHOW ONLY. If you plan on driving the car for pleasure, you should install new wire wheels and new bias-ply tires. NOTE: Radial tires may be too wide to fit inside the spare tire tray in the boot (trunk).

The original numbers matching transmission was professionally rebuilt and the the shifting is a little stiff. The car needs to be driven more in order to break it in. NOTE: The seller is almost 80 years old and cannot drive the car more than a couple of hours per month.

If you have the money, swapping out the 4-speed Moss box transmission for a new 5-speed transmission, with full synchro gears would make this car a dream to drive on the open road.

The car has Drum brakes on all four wheels. They work good but again, if you have the money, swapping the front wheels to use Disc brakes would enhance safety, especially during wet weather.

The center Hood (convertible top) toggle fastener and side curtains need adjustments made by a professional restoration shop. (The center Hood toggle fastener does not lock properly and the side curtains are difficult to fit on the doors).

Interior leather has a few small spots that need minor touch-up from a good auto upholstery shop. The shop the seller used to install the upholstery is almost 100 miles away and he would need to trailer the car to and from. They are so minor the seller is leaving them for the next owner to deal with. If you need any pictures, use the "contact seller" option and he can send up to 5-pictures in response.

REMINDER: The XK120 was purchased from Kurt Tanner, an Austin Healy restorer in Claremont, California in December 2011 and was in totally disassembled condition. The new owner, Robert Sheridan, registered the car in California not realizing the implication of its Oklahoma XK120 Rebuilt Title. Unfortunately, the California DMV assigned a Salvage Title on the Pink Slip. However, the chassis and body were and still are in perfect, straight condition with no evidence of any prior major damage. THE CAR CURRENTLY HAS A CLEAN ARIZONA TITLE.

NON-CALIFORNIA RESIDENT TITLE DISCLOSURE

In 2011, the Jaguar XK120 Oklahoma XK120 Rebuilt Title was re-registered in California and the DMV assigned a Salvage Title.

During 2020, the seller’s Jaguar XK120 was legally re-registered in the state of Vermont (a Non-Title state) then legally re-registered in Arizona (where the seller has a second residence) and the seller’s XK120 was granted a Clean Arizona Title. That means the car can be bought and registered in any state or U.S. territory and the buyer can obtain a Clean Title in their own state or territory according to the DMV rules of their state or territory. NOTE: If you live in California, see the CALIFORNIA SALVAGE TITLE DISCLOSURE BELOW.

The seller has priced his XK120 well under it's appraised fair market value OF $128,000.00 because of the California Salvage Title issue.

NOTE: If you buy the car and re-sell it in the future to a California buyer YOU MUST DISCLOSE the fact that the car was once registered in California with a Salvage title just as I am doing now.

CALIFORNIA SALVAGE TITLE DISCLOSURE

Based on the seller’s research, if you live in California DO NOT PURCHASE THE CAR unless you plan on keeping it.

If you live in California, purchase the car and transfer the clean Arizona title to California, California DMV will most likely issue a Salvage Title based on the fact that the car was previously registered in California as a Salvage Title vehicle by doing a DMV VIN search. A Salvage Title could affect the car’s resale value in the future.

However, being such a highly restored, show winning classic car, a Salvage Title may not make much difference to a California buyer and/or other potential buyers in the future, especially if they plan on keeping the car.

NOTE: Before registering the car, I advise any potential California buyer to consult with an attorney and explore whether or not the California Salvage title can legally be removed based the fact that the car has undergone a total body-off 100% restoration and there is no proof or records the car was ever severely damaged in Oklahoma and there is no record of the Title in Oklahoma at all. (All older registration records have been purged). The attorney could subpoena California DMV and ask them to produce the copy of the Oklahoma Title used to cause the California Salvage Title when the car was originally registered in California back in 2011 (they may not be able to produce it). Based on the lack of any Oklahoma DMV records and the current condition and appraised value of the car, the attorney could ask a judge to issue a judgement requiring California DMV to remove the Salvage Title as having been issued without sufficient proof to meet the definition of a Salvage Title car in California.
