Ordered on January 1, 1952 with a $200 deposit and purchased new at a total cost of $4,910.10 a little over three months later, on April 15, 1952 at Clayrich Motors of St. Louis, Missouri, this remarkable 1952 Jaguar XK120 was purchased by Mr. Reed, a WWII veteran residing in St. Louis at the time. Serial-numbered 671888, Mr. Reed would go on to be the Jaguar's lifelong owner until just recently. The original Bill of Sale remains on file with the car, along with several registration documents spanning the years of Mr. Reed's ownership, during which Mr. Reed and his beloved XK120 would participated in several auto shows and sporting events throughout the past 66 years, including those offered by the SCCA, JCNA, Jaguar Owners' Club, and Jaguar Club of Austin. Subsequently, Mr. Reed and the Jaguar relocated to Los Angeles, California, eventually settling in Georgetown, Texas. Mr. Reed has remained a very active Jaguar enthusiast through the years, and the Roadster was faithfully serviced and pampered by only him through its entire life. The current 78,910 miles are believed to be original.
This wonderful 1952 Jaguar XK120 Roadster retains its original sheet metal, identification tags, inner wood framing, and a remarkably original and faultlessly presented undercarriage. The correct lacquer paint has attractively mellowed, and was applied by Mr. Reed himself, several decades ago. A comprehensive tune-up and service were recently performed, including installation of a new clutch assembly and a complete brake service, assuring the XK120 will deliver many more years of reliable motoring pleasure. Retaining the complete numbers matching engine - both the cylinder head and engine block - per the corresponding Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, this wonderfully preserved, one-owner XK120 is accompanied by the original Operating, Maintenance and Service Handbook and Service Manual, original records, books, keys, tools, valance key, matching spare, jack, jack wrench, wheel brace, grease gun, and full weather gear including the soft top, matching side curtains, tonneau cover, plus car cover. Mr. Reed is a WW II veteran and engineer by profession, who made developments and attained patents for the ubiquitous ball-point pen during his very successful career. His hobbies are repairing antique timepieces and working on his cars. Recently, Mr. Reed related how in 1952 after returning from wartime service, he settled in St. Louis, Missouri and purchased a Mercury Coupe as a family car. Almost immediately, it started to break down, and he had trouble getting around as required. He saw the new Jaguar XK120 Roadster and was immediately smitten. He immediately got out of his Mercury and purchased this stunning Battleship Grey XK120 Roadster, and his love affair with this Jaguar lasted over six decades. A beautifully honest and original example from 66 years of fastidious ownership, its offering now at Pacific Grove provides an incredibly rare opportunity to acquire a true sporting legend with this level of ironclad provenance and long- term ownership. As such, it is eligible for most any worthy event the fortunate new owner should choose to participate in, anywhere in the world.

This 1952 Jaguar XK120 roadster was purchased new from Clayrich Motors of St. Louis, Missouri by its first owner, a World War II veteran and engineer with The Gillette Company who campaigned it in SCCA time trials and JCNA events in California and Texas. The car remained in his possession until 2018, and was acquired by the selling dealer from its second owner in 2019. Power comes from a numbers-matching 3.4-liter DOHC inline-six paired with a four-speed manual gearbox, and the body is finished in Battleship Grey over a red leather interior. Service performed since 2018 included replacement of the clutch, flywheel, and exhaust system as well as brake work, installation of a new black soft top, and more. This XK120 is offered with its original sales invoice, a service manual, operating handbook, period photos and registration slips, side curtains, a tonneau cover, a factory tool roll, recent records, a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, and a clean Texas title that lists the car’s engine number.
The car was delivered from the factory in Battleship Grey, and is said to have been repainted several decades ago by the original owner using period-style lacquer. The condition of the lenses, trim, and windshield is shown up close in the gallery below along with period Jaguar owner’s club windshield decals and SCCA badges. The folding black soft top was sourced in December 2019. A set of side curtains and a tonneau cover are also included in the sale.
Body-colored steel wheels wear Jaguar hubcaps and Pirelli Cinturato tires with 2017 date codes. A matching spare is mounted under the trunk floor. The key for the rear wheel spats can be seen. A 2018 service included replacement of the wheel bearings as well as the brake master cylinder, shoes, and hoses.
The interior is trimmed in red leather with a matching dashboard, carpets, and door panels. A factory four-spoke steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation including a 140-mph speedometer and a reverse-sweep tachometer with an integrated clock. Just over 79k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer, 150 of which have been added by the selling dealer. The windshield wiper motor was rebuilt in November 2018.
The numbers-matching 3.4L twin-cam inline-six is equipped with dual SU carburetors and was factory-rated at 160 horsepower. Results from a compression test performed by the selling dealer.
Cylinder head, engine block, and chassis stampings, chassis tags, and tire date codes are seen in detail.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. A new exhaust system was installed in 2018, and the clutch and flywheel were replaced in August 2019.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate lists the original colors and production date as well as the chassis and drivetrain numbers.
The original sales invoice from Clayrich Motors of St. Louis, Missouri shows the original owner, colors, and engine number as well as an MSRP of $4,190.10. Period photographs, a service manual, registration slips, and recent service records are also included in the sale. The seller is offering complimentary climate-controlled storage through May 2020 should the winning bidder need additional time for transport arrangements.
