    Auction 21907:
    Goodwood Revival
    13 Sep 2014 14:00 BST
Chassis number '671751' was manufactured on 31st October 1951 as a left-hand drive export model and dispatched to Hornburg in Beverly Hills, California. The car was re-imported from Alabama, USA in September 1989 and treated to a long-term restoration, which was only completed in 2011. Original parts needed for the rebuild were painstakingly collected over 15 years. The chassis was rebuilt by John Wood of Bridport before the decision was taken to build an exact replica of the alloy-bodied 'LT' Le Mans cars. Aubrey Finburgh of Classic Autos, Kings Langley faithfully recreated the one-piece aluminium body, which was mounted on a tubular steel 'birdcage' inner frame. The XK120 was then taken to Steve Grimsley of Phoenix Car Restoration - a many times winner of Jaguar XK concours awards - where no expense was spared to build the perfect car, a process that would take the next ten years. Noteworthy features include a newly rebuilt 'C' type engine, cast SU carburettors, overhauled running gear, rewired electrics, front brake air scoops, rebuilt original instruments, new Avon Roadspeed tyres, etc, etc.

Now right-hand drive, '671751' was duly registered in the UK on 3rd November 2010 with an age-related number, and was then taken to Mike Turley for trimming. Only some 200 miles have been covered since the rebuild's completion and the car is described as in generally excellent condition. Finished in British Racing Green with Sage Green leather interior, 'XKJ 470' is offered with restoration invoices, current MoT, SORN and V5C registration document. A spare set of wire wheels shod with Dunlop racing tyres is included in the sale.

The XK-120 presented here, is a fantastic recreation of the LT1 model, and was the recipient of an exhaustive and comprehensive restoration by top Jaguar professionals. The roadster remained in the US until September 1989, when it returned to England and began what was a lengthy restoration to its present appearance. Original parts were gathered over a 15-year period, which saw a chassis rebuild by John Wood, whilst Aubrey Finburgh recreated a correct one-piece aluminium body and mounted it on a tubular steel "birdcage" inner frame. The XK-120 is powered by a proper C-Type-spec engine with cast SU carburettors, while the front brakes are cooled by air scoops. The roadster's running gear was fully overhauled, its electrical system was rewired, and the original instruments were rebuilt. Additionally, the car was converted to right-hand drive by noted Jaguar restorer Steve Grimsley. Finished in British Racing Green with Sage Green leather interior and registered in the UK as XKJ 470, this Roadster promises the same thrilling, hairy-knuckled ride that was provided to LT1's original caretakers in the early 1950s, and presents a unique opportunity for the Jaguar racing collector seeking a special car for their collection.

This is a car that offers the intriguing prospect of answering one of the what-ifs of motoring racing history. A C-type Jaguar won the 1951 Le Mans 24-Hour race—that’s a matter of record—but what if the C-types had not been ready in time? That’s what Jaguar boss William Lyons feared, and, as insurance, he prepared a trio of alloy-bodied XK120s for the race. In the event LT1, LT2 and LT3, as they were registered, didn’t race, the C-types were ready for their date with destiny. LT2 and LT3 were exported to the U.S., where Phil Hill claimed a class win and third overall the first time out in August 1951. LT1 also eventually went to North America and raced extensively; today it resides in a private collection. As for this car, its chassis number identifies it as a 1951 left-hand drive export model that was originally dispatched to U.S. importer Charles Hornburg, the very man who had brought over the two LT cars months before. Perhaps that coincidence prompted its 1989 return to the UK and its lengthy restoration into a faithful recreation of the LT Le Mans cars by leading UK specialists. Original parts were sourced over 15 years; Aubrey Finburgh faithfully recreated the one-piece alloy body, which was mounted on a tubular-steel birdcage frame, and it was fitted with a C-type-specification engine featuring sand-cast SU carburetors. The lengthy process, which included conversion to right-hand drive—as per the LT cars—included an overhaul of the running gear, rewiring, rebuilding the original instruments and refurbishment and refinishing by XK concours-winning restorer Steve Grimsley of Phoenix Car Restoration. Since completion in 2011, this labor of love and passion has covered approximately 284 miles and now offers a new owner the opportunity to explore the potential of the LT Le Mans Jaguars.
