1951 Jaguar XK120 OTS SHOW CAR

The XK120 itself was almost certainly never intended to be a volume production model either.

At that time Jaguar had an engine - the newly developed 6 cylinder XK unit, but the large sedan for which it was intended was not ready.

This car, the MK VII finally appeared in 1950. In the meantime Jaguar badly needed to stir up some excitement, as its range was still of pre-war design, so the XK Open Two Seater Super Sports as it was then known was designed as a "show car" for the 1948 Motor Show.

It utilized a shortened version of the chassis designed for the MK VII, which was already in use in the post war MK V, and the brand new XK engine, the result of all the research done during the war, while Jaguar could not produce any cars.

It made extensive use of aluminum for the body panels, and William Lyons had plans to market it as a fairly low volume "specialty car". Its purpose was to maintain public interest until the introduction of the MK VII, and act as a test bed for the new engine.

The rest is now history, the car was a sensation, and orders so overwhelmed the production capability that it had to be redesigned with a metal, rather than an aluminum body, so that it could be produced on a production line, rather than largely handbuilt as the prototype and the first 239 cars were. Because of the need to redesign and retool, volume production did not come onstream until 1950.

Despite all the work done to "productionize" the car, the outward appearance did not change much at all - only some hard to spot panel curvatures reveal the difference.

Initially the car was called the XK Open Two Seater Super Sports, and was quickly renamed the XK120. The name derives from the engine and the top speed. All the engines types made during the war were "X" for experimental, and the next letter was the sequence. "K" happened to be the sequence of the engine that was up to the job.

This three owner vehicle has had a full body off rotisserie restoration, and it is a magnificent example.

The original rust free body was disassembled and stripped to bare metal. The frame has been powder coated, and the entire drivetrain has been rebuilt to original specifications.

All nuts, bolts, bearings, bushings, hoses, brake lines and chrome parts have either been replaced or replated.

It has a new leather interior, and new canvas convertible top. It comes equipped with the original side windows, tools, jack and owners manual.

The rare color on the car is called Aubergine which is French for eggplant.

The paint number is 4720M. It appears black, and in the direct sunlight shows a reddish plum hue that is absolutely gorgeous against the red leather interior, wide whitewall tires and factory spats.

Mechanically the car is as new, and this numbers matching car is tight and true.

The 120 is true classic, and known to be one of the most gracious body designs of all times.

The new owner will experience and enjoy a great investment in a rapidly rising market.

Over $150,000.00US have been spent in the creation of this masterpiece, which has won numerous events.

I purchase this 1951 XK120 Jaguar in Buffalo, NY as a used car in 1952. I was told that the previous, and probably original, owner lived in Jamestown, NY.
In 1954, I relocated to Denver, CO.
On August i8, 1998, I had the car appraised for $30,000 by F&R Import, LTD of Englewood, CO.
On February 16, 1990, I sold the car to Leslie S. Shapiro of Edwards, CO.
I believe he had the car restored by J&R Restorations in Avon, CO.
I would like to know who is now the owner and ask him to email me, either directly, or through you if he prefers.
As a 90-year-old who owned and enjoyed this car for over 64 years, I would very much like know that it is still in good hands.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
