Auction description:
The Monterey Sports and Classic Car Auction
19 - 20 August 2005
Lot 287
1952 Jaguar C-Type Replica
Sold for $90,750
Chassis no. 670798

The example presented here is a replica originally manufactured by Proteus Sports Cars Ltd.; however, the highly specialized firm Predator Performance did the actual assembly. Predator, no stranger to replicas, is known primarily for their excellent quality D-Type and XJ 13 replicas. This replica does not just look the part as every effort was made to make the car look, sound and perform just as the million dollar real things. The body is aluminum and under the bonnet is a tuned 1951 Jaguar XK120 engine and fourspeed manual gearbox with dual sand-cast SU carburetors. Stopping power is provided by Jaguar

(Mark II) disc brakes. The aluminum body is beautifully finished in dark gray metallic that is nicely complemented by Brooklands windscreen and sixteen inch wire painted wheels shod with Dunlop S Racing (600 C-16) tires. The interior is fitted with blue leather seats, beautiful XK120 gauges, three-point racing seat belts, a brass fire extinguisher mount and tonneau cover.

The fit and finish on this example is outstanding in every respect. The panel fit is near flawless and the unique color scheme makes it even more impressive to behold. A joy to drive, the Predator built C-Type replica offered here is a car that anyone can enjoy and do so at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. Since being built, this example has only covered 300 kms and is ready for many, many more.

Addendum
Please note the C-Type Replica offered here is a 1952 not a 1951 model as listed in the catalogue. Additional details on this particular car include; The engine was built to C-Type specifications and produces in excess of 250 horsepower, the drivetrain and suspension are all Jaguar and the engine is an original example sourced from an XK 120 and features the correct 2" sandcast SU carburetors. The engine was completely rebuilt with a milled head, new bearings, a correct wiring harness, starter, horn, generator, correct exhaust manifolds with a Jet Hot coated muffler system.

The gearbox is completely fresh with all new bearings and syncros, it is fitted with Jaguar disc brakes, front and rear suspension a correct C-Type dash including gauges, horn switch, emergency brake handle and shift lever. Finished in Jaguar Gun Metal grey the car is patterned after XKC009 for paint, engine configuration, etc. The car took 3 years to complete; only miles on the car are strictly test miles.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
