Auction description:
Lot No: 266
1950 Jaguar XK120 Roadster
Registration no. 153 UXL
Chassis no. 670670
Engine no. W-1452-8
Estimate: £70,000 - 90,000, € 80,000 - 100,000
Originally manufactured in left-hand drive configuration, this early XK120 roadster was imported into the UK in 1987 as a restoration project. The car comes with JDHT certificate confirming matching chassis/engine numbers and some documents from the USA indicating it was owned by Jessie James of Piedmont, California and last used in 1973. Between 1990 and 2006 the XK underwent a complete 'last nut and bolt' body off restoration bringing it to 'as new' condition. No stone was left unturned in the restoration, which was completed early in 2006. Numerous upgrades were incorporated during the course of the rebuild, including a five-speed Getrag-style gearbox; 3.54:1 ratio limited-slip differential; Coopercraft front disc brakes with 4-pot callipers; 2-pot rear disc brakes; XK150 handbrake mechanism; hydraulic clutch; alloy competition radiator; Spax adjustable gas shock absorbers; rear anti-tramp bars; and a ⅝" front roll bar. Other noteworthy features include an original factory louvered bonnet; leather bonnet strap; Lucas 700S spotlights; new/old stock shellback headlights; front indicators integral with bumpers; bucket seats; walnut dashboard; wire wheels shod with new Avon Turbospeed tyres; recessed Monza fuel filler; full race adjustable pedal box; and a pair of Connolly leather trimmed fitted suitcases.
Completely rebuilt by Les Trafford (Trafford Competition Engines) at a cost of £5,163, the fully balanced 3.4-litre engine is fitted with 'unleaded' valve seats; 1¾" inlet valves; 1⅝" exhaust valves; up-rated valve springs; inlet valve stem oil seals; lightweight cam followers; re-profiled camshafts; super lightweight flywheel; 9" diaphragm clutch (balanced) and roller-type spigot bearing. Mixture is delivered via a pair of 2" SU carburettors and exhausted via a full race C-Type system.
Superbly finished in rosso with Burgundy leather interior, this comprehensively improved XK120 roadster is offered with sundry restoration invoices, engine specification sheet, four expired MoT certificates, current road fund licence, Swansea V5 document and MoT to July 2012.

Subject to a 16 year restoration
Long term ownership with sympathetic upgrades
Chassis #670670 is offered with red coachwork and complementing red leather interior and was originally a US left hand drive supplied car with matching numbers. Imported into the UK as a restoration project in 1987 it then underwent a complete restoration to extremely high standards. It is worth noting that the owner at the time was more than simply an enthusiast, although he is certainly that. He was an extremely experienced and knowledgeable restorer with many years and XK’s under his belt as well as a not inconsiderable formula motorsport career.
This poised example represents what was a 16 year restoration before a recent 12 year love affair with our vendor and it has been extremely well maintained. The overall feel of the car is largely original right down to the correct and factory specified bonnet louvres but a number of subtle modifications have been incorporated to enhance the performance and intrinsic value. Fast road improvements include Coopercraft brakes, front and rear; bucket seats and a five speed Getrag gearbox. More technical additions include an increased capacity aluminium radiator, competition sand-cast C-Type carburetors and a correct C-Type exhaust system coupled to practical enhancements recently such as electronic ignition and fuel pump. 153 UXL is one of the very early steel bodied 120’s with a Jaguar/Daimler Heritage Trust certificate attesting to its genealogy. There are also a number of invoices from specialists including one from Les Trafford (Les Trafford Competition Engines) for an engine rebuild costing in excess of £5,000 during the restoration and many more recent invoices from the decade and more of fair weather only enjoyment including four brand new tyres for the new vendor to enjoy. This most elegant of sporting Jaguars is possibly the best combination of achingly good lines with more modern day performance and usability, ready for that road trip, European tour or even road rally this is the perfect foil for the enthusiast driver, as the vendor declares 'The ultimate head-turner wherever she goes'.
