The XK120 roadster debuted at the 1948 London Motor Show and featured handmade aluminum bodywork over an ash wood frame until steel bodywork began being utilized on XK120s in mid-1950. This steel-bodied example is said to have been finished from the factory in silver over blue upholstery, and it was repainted in Old English White during the aforementioned refurbishment. Exterior equipment includes a split front windshield, wheel spats, chrome front bumpers, chrome rear bumperettes, and a polished exhaust outlet. The car does not have a soft top.
Body-color 16″ steel wheels with hubcaps and bright trim rings are mounted with Coker Classic tires measuring 6.00–16. The car was factory equipped with an independent front suspension with telescopic-type hydraulic shock absorbers as well as semi-elliptical rear leaf springs and Girling hydraulic rear shock absorbers. Braking is provided by four-wheel drums.
The cabin features bucket seats that have been retrimmed in red leather upholstery complemented by color-coordinated door panels and carpeting. Amenities include lap belts, a passenger-side grab handle, door-panel map pockets, and a dashboard-mounted rearview mirror.
The four-spoke steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation including a 140-mph speedometer, a reverse-sweep 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 25k miles, approximately 4k of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 3.4-liter DOHC inline-six features dual SU carburetors and was factory rated at 160 horsepower. The engine was rebuilt during the refurbishment. The electrical system has been converted to 12 volts, an auxiliary electric cooling fan has been added to augment the radiator, and the ignition system reportedly has been replaced in recent years. The selling dealer notes that oil seeps from the drivetrain and the engine tends to run warm on hot days.
The engine number matches what is listed on the car’s identification plaque, which is pictured in the gallery below. The cylinder head bears a different number and has been replaced.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission.
An owner’s manual and a binder of records accompany the car. A tonneau cover, a tool roll, and spare parts are also included in the sale.
The car does not have a title, as it is registered in a state that does not issue titles for vehicles of its age. It is being sold on its Connecticut registration certificate, which identifies the car’s registered usage as “Antique”.
