Model XK120 Alloy Competition Roadster

Rolling out of the factory in Coventry on the 12th of January 1950, chassis number 87 is an early example of the 184 left-hand-drive alloy-bodied Roadsters built. Its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, records that the first dealer was Hornburg USA who was a widely renowned importer of race cars such as C-Types and D-Types.

#670087 raced in America for a number of years before being repatriated to the UK where it was again raced in first class historic motorsport. At this time the jaguar was registered as PGY 189L and achieved huge success holding lap records at just about every British race circuit. The Jaguar also won the 100kms at Le Mans beating C and D-Types and was very successful at the Nurburgring.

The continuous success in racing made PGY 189L a very well-known car and soon the Jaguar became identified as 'Piggy' due to its registration prefix.

Despite being fully functioning in the years leading up to 1990 and with MOT's to support this, the keeper at the time Mr. Ridley decided it was time for a comprehensive restoration, and with the help of marque specialists such as Fisher Restoration, "Piggy" was brought back to its former glory.

Now being sold out of long term private ownership during which the Jaguar has been used sparingly for club meetings and the occasional long-distance tour, this is an excellent opportunity to purchase a lovely older restoration of one of the very rare and increasingly desirable Alloy bodied XK120's.

Lot #191650

This 1950 Jaguar XK120 is one of approximately 240 aluminum-bodied roadsters manufactured between 1948 and 1950, of which about 180 were left-hand drive. Chassis 670087 was dispatched on January 31, 1950, for distribution via Los Angeles-based importer Charles Hornburg to its first owner Bill Harrah of Harrah’s Automobile Collection. The car is noted to have participated in SCCA racing events before being relocated to Europe in the early 1970s, where it was campaigned through the end of the decade by John Harper and Phillipe Renault, including at a 100-kilometer Historic Race held at Le Mans in 1974. The current owner purchased the green roadster in 2017 and subsequent refurbishment work involved overhauling the replacement 3.4-liter inline-six, installing a five-speed manual transmission, and refreshing the interior in tan leather. The four-wheel disc brake system also received replacement calipers, rotors, and pads, while the cooling system was outfitted with an electric fan. Further equipment includes 15″ knock-off wire wheels, dual Brooklands-style windscreens, leather hood straps, fixed-back bucket seats, four-point harnesses, a Moto-Lita steering wheel, and a Bell exhaust system. This X120 is now offered with period photos, recent service records, and a clean Illinois title in the seller’s name.

The XK120 debuted at the 1948 London Motor Show in open two-seater form with handmade alloy bodywork over an ash wood frame. The “120” in the name referred to the car’s 120-mph top speed, which made it the world’s fastest production car at the time. In response to increased public demand, steel panels were utilized beginning in 1950 to facilitate wider-scale production.

Delivered from the factory in Gunmetal Grey, this alloy-bodied example has since been repainted dark green and features white number 63 roundels on the hood and both doors. A pair of Brooklands-style windscreens are installed in lieu of a split windshield, and the bumpers have been removed. Additional details include leather hood straps, dual side mirrors, and twin exhaust outlets. The seller notes that repairs were carried out along the decklid under current ownership.

Black-finished 15″ wire-spoke wheels are secured via knock-off hubs and mounted with 185-series Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. The car was factory equipped with an independent front suspension with telescopic-type hydraulic shock absorbers as well as semi-elliptical rear leaf springs and Girling hydraulic rear shock absorbers. A four-wheel disc brake conversion has been carried out, and the calipers, rotors, pads, and outer rear wheel bearings were replaced in 2022.

The refreshed cabin has been outfitted with fixed-back bucket seats trimmed in tan leather upholstery, which are complemented by a color-coordinated dashboard and door panels. Brown carpets with tan piping line the floors and seatbacks, and further appointments include multi-point harnesses and a fire extinguisher.

The Moto-Lita wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer, a 6,500-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock, and auxiliary gauges. The cluster also includes a Lucas amperage meter. The five-digit odometer shows 7k miles, and total mileage is unknown.

The replacement 3.4-liter XK inline-six was overhauled in 2020 by North Shore Sportscars of Lake Bluff, Illinois. Work involved replacing the bearings, pistons, rods, valve components, and timing chains, as well as installing an electronic ignition system and cooling fan. Induction is via dual SU H8 carburetors, and an oil cooler is mounted near the radiator.

The five-speed manual transmission, front cross-member, and stainless steel Bell exhaust system were installed in 2018.

Correspondence from Jaguar Daimler indicates a production date of January 12, 1950, along with factory colors.

A selection of period photos showing the car on-track are displayed in the gallery below.

The frame stamping is partially illegible, and the VIN on the title—670087—is consistent with that of a 1950 Jaguar XK120.
