Auction description:

Monterey

Friday, August 17, 2012 - Saturday, August 18, 2012

LOT: 129

Estimate: $300,000-$350,000 US

Chassis No. 670059

Engine No. W 1112-8

• One of 148 left-hand drive alloy roadsters

• Comprehensively restored and well maintained since

• Original delivered colors, as per Jaguar Heritage certificate

• Vintage rally veteran

Offered here is an early example of the 184 left-hand drive alloy cars built, chassis number 59. The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, issued in June 2012, records that this open two-seater left-hand drive car was completed on December 16, 1949 and shipped to the Canadian distributor, James L. Cooke Motors in Toronto, Canada. The original dealer is not recorded, but it is likely to have been Cooke Motors, and the "date of dispatch" is shown to have been January 1950. Then, as now, it was finished in Red, with a Biscuit and Red leather interior and black soft top.

The Jaguar is equipped with the characteristic and evocative pressed steel wheels and rear wheel spats, which give a dramatic shape and proper smooth, clean look. Very frequently, wire wheels are fitted in place of the pressed steel type, which necessitates the removal of the spats due to the wire wheel hubs.

This example has benefitted from a comprehensive restoration by RM Restoration in 1990. A dozen years on, the quality of that work and the diligent maintenance and attention since can still be seen in the excellent panel fit and even gaps, which are so difficult to achieve with this body. The rich red paint shows an even, smooth reflection of light, and the bright trim glows richly. Inside, the leather trim on the seats, doors, and dashboard show only the lightest traces of use, as do the correctly fitted carpets. Under the bonnet, the twin-cam XK engine and SU carburetors appear clean, well maintained, and freshened, with even enamel coating on the exhaust manifold and tidy wiring, hoses, and clamps.

Properly used, this XK has been a two-time veteran of the Colorado Grand rally, as evidenced by the stickers emblazoned on each side of the bonnet. These cars were built to run, and run fast--there are few more entertaining and capable vintage rally mounts as these early-120 roadsters. When properly set up and maintained, they handle securely, even on cross-ply tires. As can be imagined by the performance of the test car in Belgium back in 1949, modern highways hold no terror for a capable beast such as the Jaguar XK120.

Lot was Sold at a price of $280,500

brass/black identification plate is clearly new, and the engine's head has wrongly "repunched" numbers, very clear to detect. Hoping almost the engine will be correct type of early 120s . . . ?????
As per Heritage no numbers were supplied, so surely a not matching car.
So very expensive.

1949 Jaguar XK120 Alloy Roadster
s/n 670059, engine no. W1112-8
Burgundy with Two Tone Red and Biscuit Leather Interior

This particular car was the 59th alloy roadster built, and one of 148 were left hand drive cars. The car was completed on the 16th of December 1949, and shipped to Canadian distributor, James L. Cooke Motors in Toronto, Canada. The date of dispatch is shown as January 1950, and the car was finished new in the color scheme it still wears today. This information is confirmed by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate. The car was comprehensively restored by RM Restoration in 1990 and survives in superb condition considering the age of the restoration. The car has been used twice on the Colorado Grand, which demonstrates that it is as well resolved mechanically as it is cosmetically.

The quality of the restoration is obvious, and from inspecting the car, it is clear why RM Restoration has been able to win awards at the world's foremost concours including Pebble Beach. The body is very straight throughout and has beautiful paint with minimal wear and aging. The chrome is excellent throughout and the restoration has a freshness that belies its age; it looks as though it is perhaps three or four years old. The car is also very correctly presented. The lights, steel wheels, and other details are correct, which extends to the interior as well.

The leather on the seats, door panels, and dashboard is excellent, with high quality materials, excellent workmanship, and very little wear. The carpets are similarly nice, having been executed in high quality wool and fitted to high standards. There are a few areas of wear on the backs of the seats. The instruments and controls are correct in appearance and in excellent condition throughout, although the turn signal switch is missing from the steering wheel. The steering wheel itself is excellent and has the correct early type horn button.

The engine is correctly presented and very clean. The carburetors and ancillaries have been authentically restored and the car displays great details such as the cloth wiring harness, glass windscreen washer fluid reservoir, and grease gun affixed to the firewall. The car also has its factory tire pump and jack with handle. The trunk has been thoroughly restored as well and also presents quite freshly.

This is an exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire an excellent example of one of the most iconic and significant cars of the 20th century. A genuine aluminum XK120 roadster, this car is finished in its original colors and has been beautifully restored. It is event proven, widely eligible for the world's most prestigious events, and would make a distinguished addition to any collection.

generally if a true expert will check the car looking at those little things, it will be clear if the car is a true original or not. Also the engine block can be checked to know if it is the original W 1112-8 or a spare engine supplied with the numbers. Also a check on the seats, even if reupholstered, can unveil something.
Not so very difficult indeed.
Anyway the body's red paint is more darker than usual, instead the biscuit of interiors should be darker . . . .
should be slightly darker

interesting
looking at photos provide
chassis number stamping the one in front of the radiator, these were always very lightly stamped and it looks almost like the piece of metal has been welded in!
The all important one on LH chassis rail plinth not shown
The block engine number stamping is incorrect. Alloy XK120's didn't have an engine number stamped on the head and given the surface looks like it has been worked on my guess there was a different number underneath.
The ID plate is a the incorrect repro. It would be good to see the chassis number stamping on LH chassis rail.
My records on the car go back to August 1990 and at that point I believe it was a genuine car.
A later owner was B Glieberman of Wis USA who entered in in a JCNA biennial concour in 1991.
Possibly engine missing and replaced chassis restamped and new ID plate fitted before people possibly knew better.

Nice car, though all type faces of the stampings are wrong and all plates ( chassis, Id etc.) are new and wrong, well, it doesn't mean nothing, maybe just overly ambitious restorer?

Lot 637

1949 Jaguar XK 120 roadster aluminium

Estimation 260,000 - 320,000 €

UK title

Chassis n° 670059

Engine n° W 1112-8

- Rare aluminium version

- Superb older restoration

- Original engine

- Sublime original colour

This roadster left the factory on 16 December 1949 to be delivered in January 1950 in Canada, via the distributor in Toronto, James L. Cooke Motors. It still has its original matching numbers engine today, the 3.4-litre version of the celebrated 6-cylinder twin-cam unit, the first in a glorious line that would power subsequent race cars to victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours. This stunning roadster was completely restored in the 1990s and remains in remarkably well-preserved condition today. Details of the restoration can be found in the file of photographs. Following restoration, the car took part in major American rallies such as the Colorado Grand. Rare and beautiful, it is presented in the original colour scheme of burgundy with red and tan interior. This combination accentuates the fluid lines of the car with rear-wheel spats made possible by the use of steel wheels, as originally.

Bought by the current owner just over five years ago, this car comes with a Jaguar Heritage certificate confirming its authenticity. This is a rare aluminium version of the Jaguar XK 120, a model that goes back to the start of a fantastic adventure that catapulted the British marque to the highest echelons of motor racing and sport.

This Jaguar XK120 is an excellent early series construction alloy example, presented in beautiful colors, sporting correct features and details just as it was when delivered new. The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate indicates this car is one of a mere 184 left hand drive examples built with an original hand-formed alloy body. The certificate records the car was completed on December 16, 1949, and subsequently shipped on January 13, 1950, to Toronto, Canada distributor James L. Cooke Motors. Originally finished in red with red and biscuit interior and a black top, the car was fitted with engine # W-1112-8, which is stamped on the overhead cam head and on the engine block, consistent with numbers recorded on the Heritage Trust Certificate. Having benefited from a 1990 restoration performed by RM Restorations, the car has been serviced and maintained to a high standard. The restoration continues to sustain the quality and refinement evident when it was freshly completed. Under previous ownership, this car is also known to have twice participated in the Colorado Grand. The current owner, a multiple vintage sports car enthusiast, purchased this car from Fantasy Junction in 2014, maintaining and servicing the car as needed. In July 2022, a new 12 volt Odyssey Extreme battery was installed and the brake master cylinder was rebuilt and reinstalled.

Today this XK120 presents as a beautiful alloy body example still reflective of a once spectacular show winning restoration. Although the finishes are showing signs of age, the former and current owners have exhibited great care while driving and maintaining this rare alloy bodied car. The paint remains very glossy throughout with only minor areas of age seen in typical areas. Overall, the body is in excellent condition showing remarkably well given that the restoration work was performed over 30 years ago. Panels are very nicely prepared with excellent transitions from front to rear surfaces especially considering the handmade nature of alloy construction. The hood, doors, and trunk shut and latch properly, while the rear fender spats fit properly to the car and create a beautiful profile, particularly in the deep red color. The chrome is in excellent condition, very much in keeping with the overall finish of the body. Emblems, and minor trim including the windscreen are all in excellent condition with proper fit to the body contours. Factory solid steel wheels are painted and trimmed to match the body color while a set of correctly sized 6.00-16” Pirelli tires are fitted. Overall, the exterior visual presentation is one of a sensitively matured restoration that conveys both the excellence of the original design and the quality of the restoration.

The interior has been correctly restored with proper materials, in colors reflective of the original delivery when built. The two-tone leather seats are quite nice, still properly bolstered, and comfortable with a nice hue and sheen consistent with careful use over the years. Carpeting and door panels are also in very good condition with evidence of use and mild toning in the foot wells. The dash and instrumentation are in excellent condition, all of which appear to function as expected with very nice nomenclature, needles, and race-inspired dial faces. The switches, gearshift lever, and emergency brake handle are all in very nice condition with no notable flaws. The car is fitted with a black canvas top which fits properly to the windscreen. The exterior black canvas is in excellent condition with a correct rear window, proper headliner, and correctly finished top irons. The trunk is very much in keeping with the interior condition. Materials show a bit of use but are still very tidy including the spare tire storage area which still retains the key handle suitable for removing the rear fender skirts.

Under the hood, the beautiful dual-overhead camshaft Jaguar engine still delights with excellent finishes and correct components. The restoration work has settled here as well but the finishes have been properly maintained in keeping with the look and feel of an enjoyable sports car. The overall condition of the engine is very satisfying, displaying consistent luster throughout, correct factory hardware, and proper detailing, including the correct twin air cleaners, gloss black porcelain exhaust headers, and SU carburetors. The undercarriage remains correct with proper finishes showing aging mostly to the painted surfaces. There is no visual evidence of structural compromise to the floor, suspension mounting areas, or damage to any of the major components. Even the rear leaf springs still maintain the protective wrapping, laced to preserve the lubrication, and protect the rear springs from excessive road wear. In all, the underside components are very presentable and worthy of the reputation RM Restorations has continued to deliver over the past three decades. Clearly proper care and storage have minimized the impact of time on this top-tier restoration, which remains admirably preserved after all these years.

The car starts easily on choke, reaching operating temperature and warming to a slow idle. Driving manners are composed and confident with the engine functioning smoothly and the gearbox easily engaged with each up-shift and selective downshift. The clutch takes up properly, oil pressure is good, the system charges as expected, and there is no oil smoke when running. Acceleration is brisk and cornering is still very much a delight when at speed, particularly given the open coachwork and lighter weight alloy body. The car comes with side curtains, side curtain covers, and a car cover.

This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire a rare and beautifully restored vintage Jaguar. As one of the most iconic and significant cars of the 20th century, a genuine handmade aluminum XK120 roadster remains a premier example of automotive art, worthy of the very best collections. Finished in beautiful colors, this Jaguar awaits the next owner to deliver continued ongoing care or refinement while still enjoying the open-air driving experience. This is a rare opportunity to own and drive one of just 184 left hand drive examples, ready to continue dazzling a crowd of appreciative onlookers just as it has done for more than seventy years. Please note this car is duty paid in the US, and ownership is transfered on a V5 in the name of the consignor.

My Late father purchased this very car back in 1952 from a dealer in Montreal Que. I have his original bill of sale from Midtown Motors. I also have pictures from when he owned it, they are black & white. Wish i had the wealth to own this car.

Comprehensively restored in 1990 and well maintained since

Factory-correct Red over Biscuit and Red leather interior with a black soft-top

Numbers-matching 3.4-liter inline six-cylinder engine and cylinder head

Vintage rally veteran; JDHT certificate

The example offered here is believed to be one of 184 left-hand drive alloy cars built. It was completed on 16 December 1949 and shipped to Canadian distributor James L. Cooke Motors in Toronto, Canada, according to its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate. The original dealer is not recorded, but it is likely to have been Cooke Motors, and the “date of dispatch” is listed as January 1950. Then, as now, it was finished in vibrant Red with a Biscuit and Red leather interior and black soft-top. Crucially, the car retains its numbers-matching 3.4-liter inline six-cylinder and cylinder head. Characteristic pressed steel wheels and rear wheel spats lend a dramatic shape and clean look. (Frequently, wire wheels are fitted in place of the pressed steel type, which necessitates the removal of the spats to accommodate the wire wheel hubs.)

This XK 120 benefitted from a comprehensive restoration by RM Auto Restoration in 1990, the quality of work evident in the excellent panel fit and even gaps, difficult to achieve with this body. Thoroughly appreciated on-road under previous ownership, this two-time veteran of the Colorado Grand rally remains well-preserved, a testament to consistent care from conscientious owners. Overall, the presentation is one of a sensitively matured restoration that conveys both the excellence of the original design and the quality of skilled refurbishment.

The current owner, a multiple vintage sports car enthusiast, acquired this XK 120 out of California in 2014, continuing its mindful maintenance and servicing as needed. In July 2022, a new 12-volt Odyssey Extreme battery is said to have been installed and the brake master-cylinder is said to have been rebuilt. The fuel-pump diaphragm was replaced in 2023.

Now offered with side curtains, side curtain covers, and a car cover, this XK120 represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire a well-preserved, conscientiously enjoyed example of one of the 20th Century’s most iconic cars, eminently capable and entertaining, built to run fast.

I would have expected a higher price for an aluminum XK. This is not even twice the price of a steel XK 120.
