Close up picture of engine number and later rebuilt engine are not the same block unless the number has been restamped. Early blocks did not have threaded holes for motor mounts on the side. 670042 engine pictures show an example.

2013-05-20 09:04:08 | terry mcgrath writes:

certainly as mike points out the engine block in the car as being restored in France is not the original engine block from the car, it is the later C4820 block not the original C2331 block the stamped number on an earlier pic is probably not clearer enough to accurately say whether this was the original stamped block?

To be at auction on May, 10 2014 in Monte Carlo (Monaco) by RM Auctions www.rmauctions.com

Auction description:
Monaco
10 May 2014
Lot 155
1949 Jaguar XK120 Alloy Roadster
To be auctioned on Saturday, May 10, 2014
€280.000 - €320.000
The 15th LHD XK120 built; one of 240 alloy-bodied examples
Recently restored to original specifications
An excellent vehicle for vintage tours or rallies

The car presented today, bearing chassis number 670015, is a very early XK120, and it is just the 15th example built in left-hand drive. It was manufactured on 18 October 1949 and left the factory on 11 November, bound for Max Hoffman's legendary dealership in New York City. It was finished in Pastel Blue and registered in the UK to a Lt. Commander W.H. Willson, of Kent, before it was sent to Max Hoffman's dealership in New York City, according to its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate. Allegedly, the XK120 then travelled with Willson to his next post in Canada, before passing through owners in New York and a collector of XK-series Jaguars living in California, who maintained the car in largely original condition for over 40 years.

It was then exported to France in 2008, where it was fully restored and refinished in Old English White over a burgundy leather interior. It is currently with its second European owner and has recently been refreshed, with the intention of bringing it back to its correct factory specification whilst still keeping the identical colour combination. It received a fresh repaint in Old English White and was refitted with its proper tall-neck twin SU carburettors, drum brakes, wheel spats, bucket seats, and a black soft-top, making all its mechanical components factory correct in every regard.

The early alloy-bodied cars are undoubtedly the most desirable XK120 models, and they have been very well respected by motoring enthusiasts from the instant they left the factory. The XK120 spawned a lovely series of sports cars, and to own one of the earliest examples of the fabled XK line is to experience the platform in its purest iteration. To this day, XK120s are still well regarded as touring cars, and they are frequent sights in events like the Mille Miglia and Colorado 1000. With a recent full restoration and known history from new, this example is surely one of the best.

I see 2 different ? ? commission plates in the various pics, and an underside view of block with early "caps" and late crankshaft.

"... this example is surely one of the best."

Wrong colour of rear wing beading/rear view mirror too tall/wheels look too small, somehow.

All easily corrected, though.

Hmm. They bothered to post about 5,000 photos, but not to get rear wing beading correct.

Rear wing piping color is a minor problem with this car.
Is this car really 670015?
If you follow the picture time line starting with Fred's Place photo dated 09 but probably taken before some of the 07 pictures you will see the car turn from what appears to be an original unmolested car to a ratty wreck and then back to a restored car missing most of the unique alloy features.
Something is fishy.

I can point out that the rev counter is a 1955 xk 140 gauge, model from May 1955, and the jack is "normal" 120, not early 120.
Yes the crankshaft caps are early type, and the crankshaft itself is the early one type.

What a load of rubbish comments. I first saw this car in Fred Balcar’s barn in Encinitas, California many years ago. FB is a Jag fanatic and now lives in Las Vegas after a few years in Hawaii. He sold the car to me and I sold it to my friend Pierre Collin who did a wonderful restoration job although unfortunately not in the original colours. I would like to know where the car is now
