Auction description:
Sale 14267 - Important Collectors' Motor Cars and Fine Automobilia, 4 Dec 2006
Olympia, London
Lot No: 641
1951 Jaguar XK120 Roadster
Registration no. SPG 594
Chassis no. 660877
Engine no. A 3009-7
Sold for £38,000 plus Premium and tax

SPG 594 was built in August 1951 and retained by Jaguar Cars for display and demonstration purposes until released to Henleys of London for sale to its first owner on 1st January 1953. He was to retain the car for 29 years, covering during that time some 19,000 miles only, the car being kept as a second car for recreational use. In 1982 it passed to its second owner, later changing hands again in 1985, the car then, being in such original and low mileage condition, being deemed worthy of a professional body-off restoration in the late 1980’s. This restoration included a superbly authentic re-trim by marque specialists Suffolk & Turley. The condition of the car today, almost 20 years on from that restoration, attests to the quality of the refurbishment and careful use and storage since that time. Since restoration the car has covered approximately 10,000 or so miles, the last 7,000 with the present owner who has regularly maintained the car to the highest standards and rallied it actively both in the U.K. and on the Continent. Careful scrutiny of this car reveals its superb integrity, being to factory specification in every major respect. The XK120 in its own right is a motoring icon and this example we feel is for the true connoisseur who demands both an impeccable history combined with outstanding authenticity.

SPG 594 comes from a distinguished stable of fastidiously maintained motor cars and is presented in British Racing Green livery with tan leather upholstery. It comes with its original owner’s handbook, an original workshop manual, Swansea registration document, current road fund licence and MoT certificate to October 2007 along with a bespoke full storage cover, a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate and a comprehensive history file recording work carried out and previous ownership/history.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
