Offered for sale by Christie's on Feb, 11, 2006 in Paris, France during the *Retromobile Car Show*.
The lot description reads:
Specific history of this car
660449 was originally dispatched from Jaguar on 7th February 1951, two days later the car was registered and then distributed by Parkers Ltd. of Bolton.
The car was entered alongside the works entries in the 1951 Le Mans, by privateers Bob Lawrie and Ivan Waller, under the race number 21, within the sequence of the three 'C' types works entries. After 24 hours they brought the car home in 11th position - the highest finishing placing for an XK120 at Le Mans, averaging 82.52mph for 1,992 miles. As Andrew Whyte records in his reference work Jaguar - Sports Racing and Works Competition Cars to 1953 - 'Quietly but by no means unnoticed, Lawrie and Waller in XK120 Number 21 had circulated regularly at 132.8kph - a speed high enough to have won the race two years before! Brake adjustments and repairs to the exhaust had caused only slight hold-ups, and the two amateurs covered exactly 118laps apiece.'
January 1961 - Purchased by Caterham car Services Ltd. Surrey, U.K.
June 1963 - David Cockburn, London, then Stockport, U.K.
1974 - John Colley, Holywell, Wales
May 1974 - Robert S. Kerr, Luss, Scotland.
1978 - Herbert Proctor, Blairgowrie, Scotland.
2002 - Le Mans Classic - 3rd overall, 3rd on index of performance
2002 - 50th Anniversary, Outon Park Gold Cup race, 1950s drum brake sports cars, 2nd in class
2004 - 3rd on index of performance
Condition
The car retains original chassis and body and is to correct Le Mans specifications including original racing screen and cowl, bonnet hoes to aid engine checking of water and oil, as well as quick release fuel filler cap.
In the last year it has undergone a comprehensive restoration by Guy Broad/Broadsport to uprated specification and correct F.I.A. Appendix K regulations at a cost in excess of £75,000.
Mechanically it now has a full race 'C' type specification engine, with 9.5:1 compression ratio' forged pistons, steel rods, 3.8 litre crankshaft, 'D' Type spec. full race cylinder head and new 'D' type cams, lightweight valve gear, 'D' type spec. 1 7/8 inch inlet valves, large capacity oil pump, competition spec. cam drives, uprated alloy water pump, 2 inch sand-cast 'C Type carbs, bronze valve and tappet guides, lightweight flywheel, AP Racing 9.5inch competition clutch assembly - fully balanced and blue-printed. This is mated to an original close ratio gearbox which has been rebuilt with a unique Le Mans specification reverse 'lock-out' mechanism and is transferred to the road through a new fully balanced propshaft assembly.
The chassis has been fully rebuilt with all new parts, polyurethane comp. spec suspension bushes, AVO adjustable shock absorbers, new ball joints, new bearings, mountings, bumpstops all crack tested and powder coated. An uprated anti-roll bar (22inch diameter) is fitted, a fully rebuilt 3.77 Salisbury 4HA rear axle, new uprated rear dampers, and links fitted as well as uprated rear leaf springs. New wire wheel hubs are fitted all round, the steering is full rebuilt and new trackrods etc. throughout.
The brakes are uprated competition spec., self-adjusting type, all new hydraulic cylinders and master cylinder are fitted as are all new cupronickel brake pipes.
A new correct 40 gallon Le Mans regulation fuel tank in aluminium to foam-filled FIA spec. is fitted as well as a new stainless steel twin pipe exhaust system.
Throughout the car all of the electrics have been replaced or rebuilt, there is a new loom in place and the lights are all new or rebuilt. This includes extremely rare correct 1951 Marchal headlamps and spot lamps which have been uprated with Halogen blubs and a 12Volt Drycell battery. All the instruments and switches are correct 1951 specification units, including special KPH/MPH Le Mans Speedometer and all have been fully rebuilt.
Completing the rebuild is its repaint to the original pastel green livery, then matched with suede green leather and Wilton carpeting and Bedford cord covering to the original style competition seats. A double duck tonneau cover in light tan comes with the car.
A comprehensive file accompanies the car, including FIA Papers, old UK and current UK registration papers, original results listing from Le Mans and 1951 Jaguar commemorative booklet.

I bought this from John Pollard in Stockport and it was he and David Ghandi who believed it was the Lemans car.
As I knew Lawrie had raced previously with a Riley 2,5 registered AEN10 I felt it a fair chance this was the XK that ran in 1951 which it proved to be. Lawrie was an interesting chap who had never competed and only ran at Lemans 4 times, in Aston Martin, Riley, XK and Morgan. He was a keen climber and so were members of the organising club, who he knew, and through them he was invited to enter on the gentlemans understanding that if he was not quick enough he would withdraw. It's an almost unbelievable story, but he was a character who also made boots for Everest climbers and Antarctic expeditions.

I knew this car when Bobby Kerr owned it. He raced the car in local events and drove the car on nice days when he was conducting his business. Bobby was a nice man he did ALOT of work on AEN546. He contributed to my fixation with Jaguars.
