1953 JAGUAR XK120 DROP-HEAD
COUPE # 677199.
Our car features fabulous burr walnut facia and interior trim as well as the chrome wire wheel option, first available in 1953, optional windscreen washers, tripod headlamps and twin wing-mounted rear view mirrors. Our car was found in the Thousand Lakes area of New York State in the estate of its original owner—an M.D. who had garaged this and 2 other cars in his summer house there in 1960 (the last New York State Inspection sticker –1959-- is still on the windscreen) by a local (Mendham) collector. Although the car had been driven just over 53,000 miles and it was very solid, it still wore its original paint (Cream with tan leather), and since it had not been driven in 40 years, the new owner commissioned a body-off-chassis restoration in 2000-2001, using the originally-offered color combination now shown on the car. The original engine was fully rebuilt including a rebuilt head which was sourced for the car and rebuilt by Terry's Jaguar. All other mechanicals were inspected and cleaned/rebuilt as necessary and all new brakes, shock absorbers, bushings, clutch and full wiring harness were installed. The original radiator was rebuilt with 5 rows of offset cooling tubes replacing the original 3 to create greater cooling capacity. In 2001, he car was shown at the prestigious Concours d'Elegance of The Eastern United States in Pennsylvania where it was exceptionally well received, winning the “Best Debutante” award. It is accompanied by its Jaguar-Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate showing matching numbers and an original delivery date,June 21, 1953, as well as a thick records file and its original manuals, guarantee, original sleeve, etc. Fabulous throughout! 59,288 miles.

Price: $110,000

1953 Jaguar XK120 Drophead Coupe

Chassis no. 677199

Engine no. W 8518-8 (see text)

Resplendent in the period scheme of Pastel Green bodywork with a Suede Green leather interior it is hard to imagine a better-looking embodiment of what these cars offered in period. With exceptional modern looks and in drophead form the practicality of options for anything that an East Coast day might throw at you, the same rings true to this day.

This XK120 was the 199th Drophead Coupe to have been built and was sold through Max Hoffman's esteemed New York retailing agency, with its date of dispatch noted as June 21 that year. Research by its seller has found the car to have been purchased new by a Dr. William Spurck Prescott, a New York physician. He is reported to have accumulated some 53,000 miles with the car before laying her up in 1959 at his summer house in the Thousand Islands.

There the car would rest until Dr. Prescott's passing, after which in 2001 it was sold by his estate, when it came into the ownership of a Mendham, New Jersey collector. Although its mileage had not been excessive in its brief career of use, nearing its half century it was in need of attention and the decision was made to restore the car fully. This included removing the bodywork, repainting to the period scheme we see here in place of its original cream and tan, this work being completed by M&G Vintage Auto Restorations in Tuxedo, New York, under the direction of noted British car aficionado George Medynski. Terry's Jaguar rebuilt the cylinder head, which it should be noted is a slightly later Jaguar unit, the block is the original. While the cosmetics were worked on, the engine was rebuilt by MG 'T's in West Milford, New Jersey and likewise the transmission rebuilt, with a new clutch. A known 'Achilles Heel' for these cars is cooling and so during the radiator re-cored with five rows of offset tubes for greater efficiency, this work being done by Arctic Radiator of Rockaway, New Jersey. As the project came together, the wood trim was refurbished and the chrome plating entrusted to Librandi's Plating of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

All told, the restoration was finalized in Spring 2003 just in time for a debut at the Concours d'Elegance of the Eastern United States at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania where it won the Best Debutante award. It would pass to the last owner shortly after that and was acquired by the present in 2001. Since restoration the Jaguar has been carefully though regularly used, accumulating some 16,000 miles in the last 16 years, bringing it to approximately 69,300 from new. In more recent times, the gearbox was rebuilt by Quantum Mechanics of Oxford, Connecticut.

Included in this appealing package are a period roll of tools, period literature including original Jaguar Service instructions, together with photos and some invoices for the rebuild.

This 1953 Jaguar XK120 is a late-production Drop Head Coupe finished in Pastel Green over a Suede Green interior. It is a left-hand-drive US-market car, which was imported by Max Hoffman Motorcars and reportedly purchased new by William Prescott, a New York physician. Dr. Prescott and his family added approximately 53k miles over the course of seven years before parking the car at their summer home in the Thousand Islands, where it reportedly remained stored for more than 40 years. A collector purchased the car from Dr. Prescott’s estate in 2001 and commissioned a refurbishment at George Medynski’s M&G Vintage Auto Restorations in Tuxedo, New York. Work included a bare-metal repaint, reupholstered top and interior, as well as rebuilds of the 3.4-liter inline-six, four-speed manual gearbox, suspension, and brakes. Approximately 16k miles have been added since the work was completed in 2003, and the seller acquired the car in 2011. This XK120 is now offered with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, records from the restoration, factory manuals, and a clean New Jersey title.

Pastel Green, a color offered by Jaguar between 1952 and 1957, was chosen for the bare-metal repaint. The metal repair and bodywork were performed by M&G Vintage Auto. Note the 1959 inspection sticker on the passenger-side vent window.

The brakes and suspension were reconditioned during the refurbishment, at which point upgraded shocks and bushings reportedly were installed, and new leather gaiters were added to the leaf springs. A set of chrome wire wheels come fitted with Vredestein tires, and a silver-painted 16″ spare wheel with a whitewall tire resides in the trunk.

The Drop Head Coupe debuted for 1953 and features a dark green lined convertible top, roll-up windows, and taller doors than OTS roadster XK120 models. The interior was retrimmed in dark green leather and light green carpeting during the refurbishment. The burl wood dash and chrome fixtures are refinished.

More than 69k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer, approximately 2,300 of which were added by the seller during eight years of ownership.

The 3.4-liter inline-six reportedly was rebuilt by MG T’s in West Milford, New Jersey during the refurbishment and utilizes a replacement cylinder head that was reconditioned by Terry’s Jaguar Parts in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Quantum Mechanics of Oxford, Connecticut reportedly rebuilt the four-speed manual gearbox in more recent years. An oil change was performed approximately six months ago.

The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate shows a build date of May 14, 1953, and it also lists the car’s original configuration of Cream over a Tan interior with a Fawn convertible top.

Included with the sale are a factory tool roll and jack as well as owner’s handbooks such as warranty and workshop manuals. A binder containing photos and records from the refurbishment also are included
